University Medical Center was unusual. The patient, a 62-year-old man, was made to sleep, tied with blue
drapes (消毒帷帘) and lying face up on a narrow table. But no one was touching him.
Instead, the operation was being performed by a robot, whose three metal arms went through pencil-sized
holes in the man"s chest. At the ends of the robot"s arms were tiny metal fingers, with turning wrists, which
held tiny instruments, a light and a camera. The robot"s arms and fingers were controlled by Dr. Randall K.
Wolf, sitting at a computer in a corner of the operating room about 20 feet away.
This sort of operation, heart surgeons say, is the start of what may be the biggest change in their profession
since heart bypass surgery (心脏搭桥手术) began nearly 30 years ago. "The reason we make cuts is that we
have big hands," said Dr. Wolf, the director of the surgery at Ohio State. The robot"s dainty fingers, no longer
than a nail on the small finger, at the end of the long sticks could work better.
Eventually, surgeons believe, most heart surgery will be done by robots whose arms are put in through
pencil-sized holes punched in patients" chests. Instead of directly staring into a patient"s body, surgeons will
view magnified images of the operation on computer screens. In theory, the doctor would not have to be in the
same room, or even the same country, as the patient.
B. weak
C. fat
D. quick
B. surgeons have large hands
C. large cuts take less time
D. large cuts cost less money
B. was developed at Ohio State University
C. is a new and risky procedure
D. may replace surgery done by doctors

C. robot surgery will be used on many patients in the near future
D. many hospitals will eventually offer robot surgery to patients

Jabulani-the South Africa World Cup ball, but won"t act on the problem until after the tournament.
Many players have complained that the Jabulani is too unpredictable and flies through the air too easily.
"We"re not deaf," FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said Saturday at a news conference. "FIFA has
heard about what has been said about the ball."
Valcke said that FIFA would discuss the matter with coaches and teams after the World Cup, then meet
with the manufacturer Adidas. "There are rules for size and weight, but the ball has to be perfect," he added.
But Goalkeepers have complained about the ball at every recent World Cup match.
Brazil"s headcoach Dunga got into a quarrel with Valcke over the Jabulani before the tournament,
challenging FIFA officials to come out onto the field and attempt to control it. "The balls have changed over
the last couple of years, they have become a lot faster and in addition to that in Johannesburg we are playing
at an altitude of 1 700 meters, which makes the ball even faster," former Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn
said. "Thus the goalkeepers work even harder, but I don"t think that we can take the ball or the altitude as
excuses."
Scoring was down by 16 goals in the first round compared to 2006: 117-101. However, teams played a
more defensive style in the group stage in South Africa, so whether the ball was a major factor is difficult to
measure.
Adidas has made the World Cup ball since 1970. The German company says it doesn"t know what the
problem is about because all the 32 teams were given the ball before the tournament to test it.
B. is too colorful
C. has problems in size and weight
D. is difficult to control
B. After the South Africa World Cup.
C. During the second round of the South Africa World Cup.
D. Before the first round of the South Africa World Cup.
B. the ball became heavier
C. there was complaint about the ball
D. there was high praise for Adidas
B. Goalkeeper should work harder to control a faster ball.
C. FIFA should test the Jabulani before the World Cup.
D. Players should work hard to change their playing styles.
potentially harmful long-term effects on the colon, a small study indicates.
In the study, UK researchers found that a protein-heavy, low-carb diet created certain changes in the colon
that could contribute to colon cancer risk The study itself does not show whether high-protein diets really raise
the risk of any colon diseases, but the findings raise that possibility.
Diets relatively high in protein and lower in carbs have been shown to help heavy people lose weight. "People
should not be discouraged from losing weight," Dr Flint said. However, he added, they should make sure that
any weight loss plan includes adequate amounts of fiber and a high protein intake over months to years might
have ill effects on the colon.
The findings are based on 17 overweight men who followed three short-term diets: a one-week menu plan
to keep their weight; a four-week high-protein diet with reasonable amounts of carbohydrates; and a four-week
high-protein diet low in carbs.
On average, the study found when the men were on the high-protein diets, they had higher levels of
substances known as N-nitroso compounds (亚硝基化合物) and other metabolites (代谢物) that have been
linked to cancer. And when they were on the high-protein, low-carb diet, they had lowered amounts of fiber-
originated compounds thought to be protective against cancer.
Exactly what those changes might mean for a person"s health is not clear. But Flint said that the findings
suggest that people should be cautious about consuming too much protein and too little fiber over a long period.
In general, experts recommend that adults get about 28 grams of fiber per day-though it"s not known whether
that"s enough for someone on a high-protein weight-loss diet.

AMSTERDAM-A quick-thinking French tourist outsmarted a Dutch thief after the thief tried to seize
his bag, Amsterdam police said Wednesday.
After winning a brief tug-of-war over the sports bag, the 27-year-old tourist ran into a nearby police
station with the thief in hot pursuit.
The thief "realized too late he had run straight into "the long arm of the law"", police spokeswoman Wilma
Verheij said of the incident, which took place Tuesday.
After it dawned on the thief, a 28-year-old man whose identity was not released, that he was in the middle
of a police station, he tried to run away again. But he was quickly caught by officers and arrested, Verheij said.
Liz Taylor remains hospitalized
LOS ANGELES-Heart trouble is keeping Elizabeth Taylor hospitalized in Los Angeles for some time, but
her publicist says the 78-year-old actress is OK and has been visiting with family and friends.
Taylor spokeswoman Sally Morrison said in a statement Tuesday that the two-time Oscar winner is
comfortable at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and "there has been steady improvement in her condition" since
she was admitted last week.
Taylor is being treated for symptoms of heart failure, a condition she revealed in November 2004.
"Her medical team is satisfied by her progress to date, and it is hoped and expected that this will continue
over the next few days. For now, she will remain under their care in the hospital for continued monitoring,"
Morrison said. "Friends and fans around the world should be convinced that Elizabeth Taylor is in good hands
and receiving the best possible care from her skilled and devoted doctors and nurses."
Morrison described Taylor"s condition as stable but offered no other details.
Japan halts (暂停) whale hunt after chase by protesters
TOKYO-Japan has halted its annual Antarctic whale hunt following protests from a campaign group.
Activists from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, a US-based environmental group, have been chasing
the Japanese fishing ship.
Commercial whaling was banned in 1986 but Japan uses a regulation permitting hunting for scientific
research.
Iceland and Norway have claimed official objections to the ban and continue to hunt commercially.
"Putting safety as a priority, the ship has halted scientific whaling for now. We are currently considering
what to do," Tatsuya Nakaoku, an official at the fisheries agency, told Reuters news agency.
The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society says one of its boats has been blocking the ship loading ramp (斜
梯), preventing any hunted whales from being loaded on to the ship. "Every whale saved is a victory to us, so
we"ve gotten a lot of victories down here this year," Sea Shepherd captain Paul Watson told Reuters news
agency by satellite phone from the Steve Irwin ship.

top economic chief is calling on officials to calm down and spare a thought for the environment.
Zhang Ping, who heads China"s National Development and Reform Commission, the central economic
planning agency, said only five or six of China"s 30 provinces are targeting annual economic growth of 8 or
9 percent.
The remaining provinces are aiming for growth rates of more than 10 percent this year, with some wanting
to double economic output in the coming five years.
"China has a planned energy supply of about 4 billion cubic tons of coal equivalent (等量的) for the next
five years, and this is not enough to meet demands for economic growth to double," he was quoted as saying
on the news portal sina.com.
Beijing is increasingly concerned with the ambitions of Chinese provinces across the country to chase high
growth despite the central government"s urgent request for a more moderate and sustainable (可持续的) pace
of expansion.
Years of rapid economic growth have taken a toll on China"s environment, with Beijing trying to remove
some of the damage now. It has an annual growth target of 7 percent for the next five years, well down from
last year"s 10 percent.

water and land" to set more reasonable growth targets.

which aims to make the simple treehouse become a world-class destination for travellers. The Treehotel,
located in a place called Harads, will consist of four rooms when it opens on July 17th.. the Cabin, the
Blue Cone, the Nest, and the Mirrorcube.
Two additional rooms are scheduled to open in October. The long term vision (想象) is even more
expansive. "Our goal in five years is to have 24 rooms from 24 different architects," says Treehotel
co-founder Kent Lindvall.
The first six rooms were designed by five different architects. The Mirrorcube which stands four meters
high and four meters wide, and the walls of which are made with a mirrored glass, has drawn widespread
attention as it will be attached to a single tree. "It"s an interesting building. You can"t find anything else like
this in the world today. It"s unique (独特的)," says Lindvall. "Everything will reflect in it-the trees, the birds,
the clouds and the sun in the forest. So it could hardly be seen in the forest. This is untouched forest and
we want to keep it the same way."
Lindvall says the Treehotel"s vision proves a powerful draw, with enquiries (询问) coming in from far
and wide. "I think what"s exciting here is that we"re just 60 km below the Arctic Circle. It means there"s a
good possibility to have the northern lights in the winter and of course to have the midnight sun in the
summer."
