When I was growing up in America, I was ashamed of my mother"s Chinese English. Because of her English, she was often treated unfairly. People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her. My mother has realized the limitations of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on phone to pretend I was she. I was forced to ask for information or even to yell at people who had been rude to her. One time I had to call her stockbroker (股票经纪人). I said in an adolescent (青春期的) voice that was not very convincing, "This is Mrs. Tan.." And my mother was standing beside me, whispering loudly, "Why he don"t send me check already two week late." And then, in perfect English I said:"I"m getting rather concerned. You agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasn"t arrived." Then she talked more loudly. "What he want? I come to New York tell him front of his boss." And so I turned to the stockbroker again, "I can"t tolerate any more excuse. If I don"t receive the check immediately, I am going to have to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week." The next week we ended up in New York. While I was sitting there red-faced, my mother, the real Mrs.Tan, was shouting to his boss in her broken English. When I was a teenager, my mother"s broken English embarrassed me. But now, I see it differently. To me, my mother"s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is vivid, direct, and full of observation and wisdom. It was the language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed ideas, and made sense of the world.

I was very disappointed not to be able to go to the jazz concert last Friday. The announcement in the paper said that you could buy tickets at the theater box office in Richland Hills any day between 10:00 and 4:00. Since I work from 9 o"clock to 5:30, the only time I could go to the theater was during my 45-minute lunch break. Unfortunately, the theater is on the other side of the town, and the bus service between my office and Richland Hills is not very good. But if you are lucky, you can make the round trip in 45 minutes. Last Monday, I stood at the bus stop for fifteen minutes waiting for a bus. By the time I saw one come around the corner, there was not enough time left to make the trip-so I gave up and went back to the office. The same thing happened on Tuesda y, and again on Wednesday. On Thursday, my luck changed, I got on a bus right away and arrived at the theatre in exactly twenty minutes. When I got there, however, I found a long line of people at the box office. I heard one man say he had been waiting in line for over an hour. Realizing I would not have enough time to wait in line, I caught the next bus and headed back across the town. By Friday I realized my only hope was to make the trip by taxi. It was expensive, but I felt it would be worth hearing the concert. The trip by taxi only took 10 minutes, but it felt like an hour to me. When I got to the theatre, I was relieved to see that nobody was waiting in line. The reason, I quickly discovered, was that they had already sold all the tickets.

This is a true story that happened in Japan. In order to repair a house with a history of 10 years, someone in Japan tore open the walls (Japanese houses normally have a hollow space between the wooden walls.) While painting the walls, he found that there was a lizard 1 there because a nail from outside had been hammered into one of its feet. Seeing this, he felt pity and at the same time 2 . When he checked the nail, he found it was nailed 10 years ago when the house was first built. What happened? The lizard had survived in such a 3 for 10 years-in a dark wall partition for 10 years without moving! It was incredible. He wondered how this lizard had survived for 10 years without moving a single step-since its foot was nailed! So, he stopped his work and 4 the lizard: what has it been doing and what has it been 5 . Later, he didn"t know from where 6 lizard appeared, with food in its mouth… AHHH! He was astonished and touched deeply. The lizard that was stuck by the nail had been fed by this 7 lizard. Just imagine it had been doing this for 10 tiresome years, 8 giving up hope for its partner! Before hearing the story, I watched a program on a father who kept digging in the ruins caused by an earthquake for 38 hours before finding his son, despite the dangers of fires and aftershocks. He talked about his 9 to his son: No matter what happens, I"ll always be there for you! What beautiful love that occurred between both humans and such 10 creatures as lizards! The relationship between the two lizards remains unknown, 11 no matter what it is, the love between them has done a 12 . So never abandon your loved ones.
