I told my friend Graham that I often cycle the two miles from my house to the town centre but
unfortunately there is a big hill on the route. He replied, "You mean _1_." He explained that I should be
glad of the 2 exercise that the hill provided.
My 3 to the hill has now changed. I used to 4 as I approached it but now I tell myself the
following. This hill will exercise my heart and lungs. It will help me to 5 and get fit. It will mean that I
live longer. This hill is my friend. 6 , I have a smile of 7 as I reach the top of the hill.
Problems are there to be faced and 8 .We cannot achieve anything with a/an 9 life. Helen Keller
was the first deaf and blind person to 10 an University degree. She wrote, "Character cannot be 11 in
ease and quiet. Only through 12 of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared,
ambition inspired and success achieved."
One of the main 13 of success in life is our attitude towards adversity. At times we all face
hardships, problems, accidents and difficulties. 14 we cannot choose the adversity, we can choose our
attitude towards it.
Douglas Bader was 21 when in 1931 he had both legs amputated (截肢) following a flying accident.
He was 15 to fly again and went on to become one of the leading flying aces (擅长的人). He was
a/an 16 to others during the war. He said, "Don"t listen to anyone who tells you that you can"t do this
or that. That"s nonsense. 17 your mind, and you"ll never 18 crutches(拐杖)or a stick, then have a go
at everything. Go to school, join in all the games you can. Go 19 you want to.But never, never let
them 20 you that things are too difficult or impossible."

landed on a piece of glass that cut my eye badly. My mom found a doctor who knew that if the eye
were removed, my face would look ugly, so my scarred (有疤痕的), sightless, cloudy gray eye lived
on with me.
Sometimes people asked me embarrassing questions. When kids played games, I was always the
"monster". I grew up imagining that everyone looked down on me.
Yet Mom would say to me, "Hold your head up high and face the world." I began to rely on that
saying.
As a child, I thought Mom meant, "Be careful or you will fall down or bump into something because
you are not looking." As a teenager, I usually looked down to hide my shame (羞愧). But I found that
when I held my head up high, people liked me.
In high school I even became the class president, but on the inside I still felt like a freak (怪物). All
I really wanted was to look like everyone else. When things got really bad, I would cry to my mom and
she would look at me with loving eyes and say, "Hold your head up high and face the world. Let them
see the beauty that is inside."
When I met the man who became my husband, we looked each other straight in the eye, and he told
me I was beautiful inside and out.
My mom"s love was the spark (火花) that gave me confidence. I had faced hardships, and learned
not only to appreciate myself but to have deep compassion (怜悯) for others.
"Hold your head up high" has been heard many times in my home. Each of my children has felt its
invitation. I say it to my children. The gift my mom gave me lives on in another generation.
B. Because her mother wanted her to be confident.
C. Because her mother didn"t want her to be seen as a "monster".
D. Because her mother thought the author looked prettier when she did that.
B. The author gave her children encouragement and love, as her mother had given her.
C. The author was always confident after the accident.
D. In high school the author was chosen to be president of the student"s union.
B. didn"t quite understand the meaning of her words.
C. faced the same difficulty as their mother.
D. benefited from their mother"s words.
B. How I found my life-partner
C. My terrible childhood accident
D. Disability is no shame
a dog as a friend for their cats are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found a new recipe
of success. According to the study, if the cat is adopted before the dog, and if they are introduced when
still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly probable that the two pets will get
along swimmingly. Two-thirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat
and dog.
However, it wasn"t all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in
25% of the homes, while aggression and fighting were observed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this
is probably that some of their body signals were just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head
away it signals aggression, while a dog doing the same signals submission (恭维).
In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behavior. They are
learning how to talk each other"s language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk "dog", and dogs
can learn how to talk "cat".
What"s interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can
learn to read each other"s body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than we
preciously suspected. Once familiar with each other"s presence and body language, cats and dogs can
play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together in the sofa. They can easily
share the same water bowl and in some cases groom (梳理) each other.
The significance of this research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets-to people who don"t get along,
including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even world superpowers. If cats and dogs can learn to get
along, surely people have a good chance.

had kicked her 2 their car the night before ."No 3 for her any more with the baby coming." "We
never really wanted her, but what could we have done? She was a 4 ." People find all sorts of excuses
for 5 an animal.
I called her Goldie. If I had 6 what was going to happen I would have given her a more creative
name. She was so unsettled during those 7 few days. She hardly ate anything and had such an air
of 8 about her. There was 9 I could do to make her happy, it seemed. Heaven knows what had
happened to her at her 10 owner"s. But 11 at the end of the first week she calmed down. Always by my side.
12 we were out on one of our long walks or sitting by the fire.
That"s why it was such a 13 when she pulled away from me one day when we were out for a
walk. We were walking a long way from home, when she started 14 and getting very restless.
Eventually I couldn"t hold her any longer and she 15 down the road towards a farmhouse in the
distance as fast as she could.
By the time I 16 the farm I was very tired and upset with Goldie. But when I saw her licking (舔)
the four puppies(幼犬)I started to feel 17 towards them. The woman at the door said, "I took her
for a walk one day, 18 the puppies were born, and she just disappeared." "She must have tried to
come back to them and got lost," 19 a boy from behind her.
I must admit I do miss Goldie, but I"ve got Nugget now, and she looks just like her 20 .And I"ve
learnt a good lesson:not to judge people.

me realize that some of the acts of 1 that we might do
naturally might never be 2 by the receivers.
I was six years old and in adopted care. My adopted
mother was not the 3 of person I would have 4 to
stay with. One morning she sent me to the 5 for a sack of
flour. On the walk back home I was doing what any six year old
would have been doing 6 . Because of that I dropped the
sack of flour and it burst 7 spilling (撒) the flour all over
the ground. I knew that this meant I would be in big 8
when I got home.
So I ran back to the store and asked the clerk 9
could have an empty bag and a scoop so I can 10 up as
much of the flour as possible. There was no way I was going
home empty 11 .
Returning to the scene of the accident, to my 12 ,

of salvaging (救捞) it now!
The driver saw the 14 on my face and pulled over. He

professor, who was commonly 1 the students" friend. As
they went 2 , they saw lying in the path a pair of old
shoes, which they supposed to 3 a poor man who was
