laundry, meals, carpool, snacks and outings. The only thing on my husband"s description would be the
word "fun" written in big red letters along the top.
Our parenting styles complement each other. His style is a nonstop adventure where no one has to
worry about washing their hands, or eating vegetables. I"m too busy worrying to be fun. Besides, every
time I try, I am constantly outdone by my husband.
I bought my children bubble gumflavored toothpaste, and I taught them how to brush their teeth. They
thought it was neat until my husband taught them how to rinse(濑口)by spitting out water between their
two front teeth like a fountain.
I tried singing fun songs as I washed behind my children"s ears during bath time. They enthusiastically
sang and clapped until their father came in and taught them how to catapult (弹射) the soap into the sink
with the washcloth.
I took the children for a nature walk to corral (把……赶入……) a slow ladybug(瓢虫)into my son"s
insect cage. I was "cool" until their father came home, spent two minutes in the backyard, and captured a
beetle the size of a Chihuahua (吉娃娃,一种产于墨西哥的狗)..
I try to tell myself I am a good parent even if my husband does things I can"t do. I can make sure my
children are safe. But I can"t wire the VCR so my children can"t watch their favourite video.
I can carry my children in my arms when they are tired and kiss them good night. But I can"t flip them
upside down so they can walk on the ceiling or prop them on my shoulders so they can see the moths
flying inside the light fixture.
I can take them to doctor appointments, but I"ll never go into the wilderness to fish. I"ll even sit in the
first row of every Little League game, but I"ll never teach my children how to hit a home run or slide into
first base.
I can do a lot of things for my children, but no matter how hard I try, I can never be their father.

what?"
I always take a deep breath on this very leading question. "What?" I asked.
"I just won a sales contest at work and the prize is dinner for two at the new fancy restaurant down
by the river front!"
Her excitement was inspiring. We knew the restaurant was superior because we could only
understand parts of the menu. "See? I told you there would be a place for me to wear my new spring
outfit," she shyly reminded me.
"Two can play at that game," I responded. "I will wear my gray suit, my Borsalino imported straw
hat and a new silk tie. We will be dressed very well. This town will never be the same. Almost like our
first date."
It was early spring and nearing dusk as the head waiter showed us to a table by a window, with a
view of the river. The table was beautifully set, with a smoke-gray tablecloth decorated by bright red
napkins, lemon slices in the long-stemmed water glasses, fresh flowers. A delicious meal served in such
an atmosphere should be remembered a long time. As it turned out, this would probably never be
forgotten.
As the shadows lengthened, the riverboats rocking in the river, I murmured, "Why don"t we walk
down the path like we did in Paris a few years ago? Remember the fun we had?"
Hand in hand, we walked by the stores. People smiled and nodded. Lots of smiling and nodding,
in fact. "I never realized there were so many friendly people as we have seen this evening, dear," I
observed.
"Probably your new straw hat. Or the fact that you"re such a handsome guy," she answered.
We completed the walking tour past the store windows. After acknowledging many smiles, we
found ourselves back at the restaurant, looking at our reflection in the window. It was then that I saw
the reason for all the smiles.
Caught in the fly(纽扣盖) of my trousers and hanging down for all to see was a bright red napkin
from the restaurant!

C.To describe a delicious dinner.
D. To tell us the love of an old people.
B. Because she wanted to have fun just like they did before.
C. Because she was given a prize for her excellent work.
D. Because they missed the atmosphere in the superior restaurant.

C. Stupid

A Divine Plan At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves learningdisabled children, the father of one student delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by those who attended. He began with a question. "Everything God does is done with perfection. Yet, my son, Shay, cannot learn and understand things as other children do. Where is God"s plan reflected in my son?" The audience was stilled by the question. The father continued,"I believe that when God brings a child like Shay into the world, an opportunity to realize the Divine Plan presents itself. And it comes in the way people treat that child." Then he told the following story: Shay and I walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked,"Do you think they will let me play?" I knew that most boys would not want him on their team. Shay didn"t even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball. So I approached one of the boys on the field and asked if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance from his teammates. Getting none, he took matters into his own hands and said, "We are losing by six runs(得分). The game is in the eighth inning(回合). He can be on our team and we will try to put him up to bat in the ninth inning." In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay"s team scored a few runs but was still behind by three. At the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the outfield. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay"s team scored again. They had the potential to win. Would the team actually let Shay bat at this juncture and give away their chance to win the game? Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. At last, understanding what the boy"s intentions had been, the boys from both teams helped Shay win the game for the team and Shay was cheered as the hero. "That day," said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face,"the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of the Divine Plan into this world." 1. Why did the father think most of the boys wouldn"t let Shay join them? A. Because it was a very important game and they couldn"t afford to lose it. B. Because they knew Shay was physically disabled. C. Because they didn"t get on well with Shay. D. Because they knew Shay was anything but good at playing baseball. 2. The sentence "Although no hits came his way, he was obviously very happy just to be on the field." should be put at the end of ________. A. Paragraph 5 B. Paragraph 6 C. Paragraph 8 D. Paragraph 9 3. What can we infer from the passage? A. Shay"s team would have lost the game without him. B. The opponent team let Shay score purposely. C. It was quite by accident that Shay scored. D. Shay"s team let him play because they didn"t take the game seriously. 4. The underlined word "juncture" can be explained by ________. Recently a young fellow from Sheridan was accused of first-degree murder. The youth was 15 years old when he shot and killed a 79-year-old man while burglarizing (入室盗窃)the man"s home. The victim was a well-respected and much loved Sheridan citizen. The crime and punishment are tragedies. It was a tragedy that a wonderful citizen of the city was shot and killed in his bedroom in the middle of the night. It is another tragedy that the young man, now 17, will likely spend the rest of his life in prison. His mother had largely neglected the young man. Suffering an unhappy marriage life, his mother sent him to live with an aunt and uncle in Sheridan. The youth really had no activities other than skateboarding at the skate park. The circle of friends that the youth had was basically in 1he same boat: they had little parental love and care in their lives. I wonder what would have happened to the young fellow if he had been introduced to the joys of the outdoors at an early age. Perhaps his life would have taken a different course. Many of us have learned our outdoor skills by observing our parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, or some other adults. Basically, the people who taught us cared for us and wanted to get us interested in their outdoor activities. Parents, grandparents, relatives, and friends of the family need to do the same thing today. We need to educate our children in outdoor skills. We need to teach them by taking them fishing, hunting, hiking, birding, horseback riding, and swimming. Most of all, we need to spend time with our children and show them we care. We need to give our youths some healthy outdoor alternatives to the drug and troublemaking culture that results from too little supervision and too little love. By doing so, perhaps we can avoid further tragedies. | |||
