came out of his office, a street boy was 1 the shining car. “Is this your car, Paul?” he asked.
Paul 2 , “My brother gave it to me for Christmas.” The boy was astonished. “You mean your brother gave it to you and it cost you 3 ? Paul, I wish…” he hesitated.
Of course Paul knew he was going to wish he had a 4 like that. But what the boy said surprised Paul greatly.
"I 5 ", the boy went on, "that I could 6 a brother like that."Paul looked at the boy 7 , then he
said. "Would you like to take a ride in 8 car?"
"Oh, yes. I’d love that."
After a short 9 , the boy turned and with his eyes shining, said, “Paul, would you mind driving in front of my 10 ?”
Paul smiled a little. He knew he wanted to show his 11 that he could ride home in a big car. But Paul was 12 again. “Will you stop where those two steps are?” the boy asked.
He ran up to the steps. 13 in a short while Paul heard him coming back, but he was coming 14 .
He was carrying his little brother disabled in one leg. He sat him down on the step and 15 the car.
"There he is, Buddy, just like I told you 16 . His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn’t cost him a cent. And 17 I’m going to give you one just like it…, then you can see by yourself all the 18
things in the Christmas window that I’ve been trying to tell you about.”
Paul got out and 19 the boy to the front seat of his car. The 20 older brother climbed in beside
him. The three of them began an unforgettable holiday.

tired and was losing weight fast. Diagnosed with diabetes(糖尿病), Thomas would need to inject himself with insulin(胰岛素) three times a day for the rest of his life or risk nerve damage, blindness, and even
death. And if that weren"t bad enough, he had no health insurance.
After a month of feeling upset, Thomas decided he"d better find a way to fight back. He left Canton,
Michigan for New York, got a job waiting tables, nicknamed himself the Diabetic Rockstar, and created
diabeticrockstar.com, a free online community for diabetics and their loved ones-a place where over 1,100 people share personal stories, information, and resources.
Jason Swencki"s son, Kody, was diagnosed with diabetes at six. Father and son visit the online
children"s forums(论坛) together most evenings. "Kody gets so excited, writing to kids from all over,"
says Swencki, one of the site"s volunteers. "They know what he"s going through, so he doesn"t feel alone."
Kody is anything but alone: Diabetes is now the seventh leading cause of death in the United States,
with 24 million diagnosed cases. And more people are being diagnosed at younger ages.
These days, Thomas"s main focus is his charity(慈善机构), Fight It, which provides medicines and
supplies to people-225 to date-who can"t afford a diabetic"s huge expenses. Fightit.org has raised about
$ 23,000-in products and in cash. In May, Thomas will hold the first annual Diabetic Rockstar Festival in
the Caribbean.
Even with a staff of 22 volunteers, Thomas often devotes up to 50 hours a week to his cause, while
still doing his fulltime job waiting tables. "Of the diabetes charities out there, most are putting money into
finding a cure," says Bentley Gubar, one of Rockstar"s original members. "But Christopher is the only
person I know saying people need help now."

Like any good mother, when Karen found out that another baby was on the way,she did what she could
to help her 3-year-old son,Michael, prepare for a new baby.Day after day, night after night,Michael sang to
his mommy"s tummy(肚子).
Finally,Michael"s little sister was born. But she was in serious condition. With sirens (警报) howling in
the night, the ambulance rushed the baby to St.Mary"s Hospital. The days inched by.The little girl became
worse. The pediatric(儿科的) specialist told the parents to prepare for the worst.
Michael kept begging about singing to his sister, but kids are not allowed in pediatric department at
St.Mary"s Hospital.Karen made up her mind to take Michael to see his sister. She dressed him in an
oversized suit and marched him into the hospital. He looked like a walking laundry basket, but the head
nurse recognized him as a child and shouted,"Get that kid out of here now!"Karen rose up strong, and the
usually mild-mannered lady glared steel-eyed into the head nurse"s face."He is not leaving until he sings to
his sister!"
Karen towed Michael to his sister"s bedside. He gazed at the tiny baby losing the battle to live. And
he began to sing.In the pure-hearted voice of a 3-year-old,Michael sang,"You are my sunshine,my only
sunshine. You make me happy when skies are grey."Instantly the baby girl responded. Her pulse rate
became calm and steady. Her strained breathing became smoother.
"Keep on singing,Michael.""The other night, dear,as I lay sleeping,I dreamed I help you in my arms…
Michael"s little sister relaxed as healing rest seemed to sweep over her."Keep on singin,Michael."Tears
conquered the face of the nurse."You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. Please don"t take my sunshine
away."
The next day-the very next day-the little girl was well enough to go home!

finally decided to ask his boss for a salary raise. All day Andrew felt nervous. 36 Mr.Larchmont
refused to 37 his request? Andrew had 38 so hard in the last 18 months. 39 , he deserved a wage
increase.
The thought of walking into Larchmont"s office left Andrew weak 40 .Late in the afternoon he finally
gathered the 41 to approach his superior. To his 42 and surprise, the ever-frugal (一贯节省的)
Harvey Larchmont agreed to give Andrew a 43 !
Andrew arrived home that evening, 44 their dining table set with their best china, and candles lit.
His wife, Tina, had prepared a delicate meal 45 his favorite dishes.Immediately he 46 someone
from the office had tipped her off!
Next to his plate Andrew found a beautiful lettered 47 .It was from his wife, which read: " 48 , my
love! I knew you"d get the raise! I prepared this dinner to show just how much I love you.I"m so 49
of your accomplishments!" He read it and stopped to 50 how sensitive and caring Tina was.
After dinner, Andrew was on his way to the kitchen 51 he observed a second card had slipped out of
Tina"s pocket. He picked it up.It read: "Don"t worry about not getting the raise! You do deserve one!
I prepared this dinner to show you just how much I love you 52 you didn"t get the increase."
Tears 53 in Andrew"s eyes.Total acceptance! Tina"s support for him was not 54 upon his
success at work.
The fear of rejection is often softened and we can undergo almost any setback or rejection when we
know someone loves us 55 our success or failure.
