I have been told in China, having a pet, particularly a dog, is often considered to be a status symbol because it shows the family can 36 to have an animal. It is different here.
In Canada it is 37 for people to have pets. Many people have dogs. Many others have cats and there are people who keep fish, birds or rabbits. Some keep what we call exotic pets. These might be ferrets, snakes or almost any other animal you can think of, although keeping 38 pets is often difficult and because it can also be hard on the animal. The keeping of some exotic animals is not allowed by law.
Now, my wife and I live in a small town. We no longer have a 39 --- we live in an apartment. We have a cat named Callie and she never goes out 40 onto the balcony so cars are no longer an issue. She’s about sixteen years old and will probably live to be twenty or more. The 41 will come when she dies and we no longer have a pet. We have had a pet for so long it seems like a natural part of our lives and without a cat around the house it will seem somehow 42 . On the other hand, we are getting older and given that a cat can live about twenty years we wonder if we will ever have another after Callie goes. Cats are cutest, of course, when they are small kittens but a kitten is 43 for a longer time than we may have left.
I think having a pet is very good for a number of reasons. It helps to teach children how to look after a 44 creature, makes them realize that animals have feelings just like we do and that, in many ways, we depend on each other. For older people like me an animal is a 45 and a comfort to have around, a pet, properly treated, returns the favor by 46 unconditional love. Wouldn’t this world be a great place if people could learn how to do that.

PART FOUR WRITING
Section A
Directions: Read the following passage and complete the diagram by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each numbered blank.
Frederic Chopin is one of the most romantic figures in musical biography. He was dreamy and tender(温柔的). Chopin was born at a village near Warsaw, in Poland, on the 22nd of February 1810.
In his early years Chopin showed himself very interested in music. He was only nine when he made his first public appearance. Chopin had been studying with Elsner, the director of Warsaw Conservatoire, for some time when his father thought it would be good for him to have a little tour before settling down to the practice of his profession. Thus a tour was arranged, Berlin was the first place visited where he heard a lot of music. And then came an important visit to “the beautiful musical Vienna.” There he was surrounded with requests to play in public. After Vienna, he visited Prague and Dresden, where he met more musical celebrities.
It was Paris where he decided to perfect his technique that Chopin finally settled in. The performance came off in 1832, and though the audience was small the artistic success was great. Prince Radziwill took him to a party at the Rothsehilds. He was asked to play, and he played so beautifully that he was drowned with praise. Thus was the young Pole(波兰人)launched on his career of popularity in Paris.
Pauter says truly that Chopin never in his life wrote a bar of music that contained an inferior idea. And there was nothing vulgar (粗俗的) about himself. Nobody knew him better than George Sand. She says, “Gentle, sensitive, and very lovely, he united the charm of adolescence with sincerity of a more mature age.”
Section B
Directions: Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions according to the information given in the passage and the required words limit. Write your answer on your answer sheet.
Every woman worries about the day when she glimpses the first wrinkle (皱纹) in her otherwise smooth skin. But for many, that day is arriving even earlier than they expected.
Sun and cigarettes in adolescence and early adulthood are the sinner (罪魁祸首) behind age spots, broken blood vessels and irregular pigmentation (色素沉着) by the time you’re in your 30’s. Avoiding those two is the best way to keep skin look young as long as possible. But if damage is done, don’t lose hope. You can take advantage of a lot of skin-care products.
What can you expect from these and other skin-care products? Here’s some advice from the experts:
Sunblock
It seems obvious, but dermatologists (皮肤科医生) say many people still wrongly assume that sun protection is required only for a day at pool or beach. In fact, you need it every day. Wonder what your skin would like if you’d kept it protected from the sun? “Look at your butt (臀部),” says Dr. Steven Cohen, chief of the dermatology department at Montefiore Medical Center in New York. “It’s smooth, without wrinkle.”
Spot removers
To specifically target “sun spots” and even out skin color, dermatologists recommend products with hydroquinone (氢醌;对苯二酚), which gradually whitens the skin. Side effects include redness and irritation. Avoid these products if you’re pregnant because they can hurt a developing fetus (胎儿).
One more point: you’re never too late to protect your skin. You may feel like giving up when you see the consequences of teenage tans (dark color spot) in your mirror, but that’s no excuse for skipping daily sunblock. Sun damage is accumulative—and that means every day’s rays do a little more harm. So keep on doing it, and you may get a big surprise after ten or more years.
