Education is not an end, but a means to an end. In other words, we do not educate children only for the purpose of educating them. Our purpose is to fit them for life.
In some modern countries it has for some time been fashionable to think that by free education for all — one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough; we find in such countries a far larger number of people with university degree; they refuse to do what they think “low” work; and, in fact, work with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries. But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor; we can live without education, but we die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses, we should get terrible diseases in our towns.
In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means that we must be educated in such a way that, firstly, each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability and, secondly, that we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that is very bad to be ashamed of one’s work. Only such a type of education can be considered valuable to society.
60. The writer of the passage thinks that _______.
A. education can settle most of the world’s problems
B. free education for all probably leads to a perfect world
C. free education won’t help to solve problems
D. all the social problems can’t be solved by education
61. The writer wants to prove that _______.
A. our society needs all kinds of jobs
B. our society needs free education for all
C. a farmer is more important than a professor
D. work with hands is the most important
62. The purpose of education is _______.
A. to choose officials for the country
B. to prepare children mainly for their future work
C. to let everyone receive education fit for him
D. to build a perfect world

Anybody running a company knows that a well - planned conference can greatly improve performance of that business. The main reason for this is that it takes your employees away from the daily workplace and offers them somewhere fresh for a short time. However, unless the conference is well thought out it will not have the best results and you will have wasted a great deal of money. Here are some tips for you.
The first step is to find the right place. Can your employees easily reach the conference center? Is it near a railway station? Is it close to a good, fast road? Has it plenty of suitable parking space? If you are going to choose a hotel, then perhaps the hotel has cheaper rates at weekends or,if it is in a popular tourist area, midweek rates may be cheaper.Furthermore, you need to think whether there is a bathroom. After a day’s meeting, maybe your employees would like to have a hot water bath.Or maybe there are other needs to satisfy depending on your employees’ taste.
Another important requirement is food and drink. Breakfast is a time when people can relax before work begins, but you may not want a long break for lunch in the middle of the day.Buffet(自助餐) lunches are very popular for this reason. Then there is dinner, which most employees consider a reward for a day’s hard work!
Whatever your needs are,it is essential(基本的)to think ahead if you want a successful conference.

A car needs gas to run and your body also needs food to work for you. Eating the right kind of food is very important. It can help your body grow strong to take care of what you eat.
There are four main food groups altogether. The dairy group has food like milk, cheese and sour milk. The other three groups are the meat and fish group, the fruit and vegetable group, and the bread and rice group. Each meal should have at least one food from all four main groups. Is there anything more important than health? I don’t think so. “Health is the greatest wealth(财富),” wise people say. You can’t be good at your studies or work well when you are ill.
If you have a headache, toothache, backache, earache or bad pain in the stomach, if you complain of a bad cough, if you run a high temperature and have a bad cold, or if you suffer from high or low blood pressure, I think you should go to the doctor.
The doctor will examine your throat, feel your pulse, test your blood pressure, take your temperature, sound your heart and lungs, test your eyes, check your teeth or have your chest X-rayed. After that he will advise some treatment, or some medicine. The only thing you have to do is to follow his advice.
Speaking about doctor’s advice, I can’t help telling you a funny story.
An old gentleman came to see the doctor. The man was very ill. He told the doctor about his weakness, memory loss and serious problems with his heart and lungs. The doctor examined him and said there was no medicine for his disease.
He told his patient to go to a quiet place for a month and have a good rest. He also advised him to eat a lot of meat, drink two glasses of red wine every day and take long walks. In other words, the doctor advised him to follow the rule: “Eat at pleasure, drink with measure and enjoy life as it is.” The doctor also said that if the man wanted to be well again, he shouldn’t smoke more than one cigarette a day.
A month later the gentleman came into the doctor’s office. He looked cheerful and happy. He thanked the doctor and said that he had never felt a healthier man.
“But you know, doctor,” he said, “it’s not easy to begin smoking at my age.”

When coal is burned in a boiler, two kinds of ash by-products are produced: a heavy bottom ash and a fine-as-powder fly ash. About 10 to 15 percent of the coal by-product is bottom ash which is used like sand on streets and highways covered with ice, and also on highways as paving material.
It is the fly ash, however, that is receiving much attention. Once considered a waste, fly ash is now regarded as a natural resource in the United States. It can be placed in some lower places, where it is compacted(压实) and covered with soil, for the seeds of various grasses and plants to be placed in the soil to make the land productive.
Fly ash may be added to concrete (混凝土)to build roads and other kinds of buildings, taking the place of the cement(水泥) up to 20 percent. As a by-product of burned coal, fly ash requires no extra energy to be produced, while cement production requires great amounts of energy.
Besides, the technology is able to take out some useful minerals from the fly ash, which is still a very expensive process today. But the time may come when it is cheaper to take out these products from ash than to mine new supplies.
49. The bottom ash can be put on icy streets________.
A. in order to rebuild them B. in order to make them colorful
C. so that people can walk on them D. so that cars can run faster
50. The fly ash can be used to________.
A. grow various plants B. take the place of soil
C. cover productive land D. make more productive land
51. Which of the following is right?
A. To produce fly ash, some extra coal is to be burned.
B. Fly ash is made while producing cement.
C. It takes less energy to produce fly ash than cement.
D. Fly ash is a costless by-product.
52. The word “mine” in the last sentence of the passage means_______.
A. to buy things from other countries
B. to search for useful materials in the mountains
C. to dig deeply into the ground to get useful materials
D. to take out certain materials from other things
