举一反三

I don" t know if I am missing the greatest pleasure of my life. I am no fan of computer games. Some guys forget themselves and forget day and night when they play games. For example, a colleague has been playing since 1 o’clock this morning and now it is 7 o"clock. He is still commanding his army of little people to attack strange-looking animals. Some games could be fun, 1 admit, and it is therefore understandable that such a game catches players. For example, games like Red Storm or some role-play games, you do something and try to outwit(智胜) your computer. You get some fun out of these games. It is understandable that such a game pushes you into a pitfall(陷阱) of pleasures. But some games look quite stupid and simple. Again for example, my colleague has been interested in Stone Age, a cartoon-like game rooted in prehistoric time. The game is well made, full of strange people and animals and you can play on line with partners. You can have reference books to study so as to shortcut your rivals(对手) and increase your own conquering power.
I believe some kinds of games are really created for adults. But seeing these adults play the simple games with such interest, I just wonder if there is something wrong with me and if I am losing the greatest possible fun of my life. I ask why I don’t bother playing such games and why I seem to have some aversion(讨厌) to such games. I have no answers. Certainly computer games is no my idea of a good time. I would rather listen to some music or read a book. Take music for example. Good music tops my list of pleasures. Nothing could beat music, all in a harmony of sounds and emotions. But how about games? Why am I so strongly biased(偏见) against such games?

When you are talking to somebody at a party, do you focus entirely on the person you are speaking with or does your attention keep jumping around the room to all the other people there? General1y, if the person is someone you really want to talk to, you will focus on him. Most other people will only get about half of your attention.
You may think that this is OK, because if you don’t really want to talk to him, then what does it matter if you don’t give him your full attention? Consider two things. First, you may just not realize the importance of that conversation. If you are at a networking meeting and you hope to meet the CEO of Company X, but you end up talking to someone who has a low-level job at a different company, then you may let your attention wander (走神) as you speak to him. But maybe you don’t realize that this person has already met the CEO and could introduce you. Do you think he will do that if he feels you don’t really care about speaking to him? This doesn’t mean you need to spend the whole time talking to him. Five or ten minutes of real attentive (专心的) conversation can be worth 30 minutes to an hour of partial attention.
Second, whether you want to speak to someone is based on the situation. You can love your wife, but if she tries to talk to you while you are watching something you like on TV, where is your attention going? Make your own decision, but if you want her to feel valued, give her your 100% attention. The nice thing is that in many cases you can give her your attention for a few minutes and then return to what you were doing. You miss very little, she feels valued, and all is good.
60.The author’s opinion is made believable mainly by ________.
A. giving examples    B. using figures     C. asking questions       D. description
61.The second paragraph mainly tells you that ________.
A. you should focus on whoever you are talking to
B. you should be interested in everyone at a party
C. you can refuse to talk to someone you don’t like at a party
D. you should be patient with everyone at a party
62.A person who has a low-level job probably ________.
A. would like to talk to you                   B. is the one you’re looking for
C. wants to make friends with you         D. is well worth focusing on
63. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. Always be friendly to others at a party.
B. Improve your communication skills by focusing on others.
C. It is important for you to be active at a party.
D. You should respect your wife at any time.

Many years ago, when I was first out of school and working in Danver, I was driving to my parents’ home in Messouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Okiahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款台), I said hello to an old couple who were also paying for gas. I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend’s. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon after, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.
Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I’d left the lights on all day, and the battery(电池) was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford shop(a shop selling cars)was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.
“Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?” I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment; so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks, I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank-you, and it meant a lot, he said.
“Thank you”-- two powerful words. They’re easy to say and mean so much.
57. The author planned to stop at Oklahoma City___________.
A. to visit a friend              B. to see his parents
C. to pay at the cash register       D. to have more gas for his car
58. The words “took off” underlined in Paragraph 2 mean “___________ ”
A. turned off       B.moved off    C. put up     D. set up
59. What happened when the author found smoke coming out of his car?
A. He had it pulled back to the gas station.
B.The couples sent him a business card.
C. The couple offered to help him.
D. He called his friend for help.
60.By telling his own experiences, the author tries to show__________.
A. how to write a thank-you letter     B. how to deal with car problems
C. the kindheartedness of old people    D. the importance of expressing thanks
