Peter and his mother lived in a small village. They were very poor. To help his mother, Peter often collected wood from the forest. He also cut down small trees. One morning, a bird flew down from a branch and asked him not to cut down a certain tree. The bird explained that its home was in the tree.
Peter left the tree alone. The bird was happy and asked Peter to bring along an empty bag the next morning. Early the next day he went to the tree and waited for the bird.
The bird soon appeared and asked Peter to hold on its tail and follow him. They went to a faraway valley. Peter saw gold all over the place. He picked up some pieces of gold and put them into his bag. The bird told Peter that they must leave the valley before the sun came up. Peter quickly filled his bag and left for home.
He now had plenty of money for himself and his mother. Peter told his best friend about the tree, the bird and the gold. His friend wanted some gold too. He went to the same tree and pretended that he was going to cut it down. The bird asked him not to do so. The following morning it led Peter’s friend to the valley of gold. When the sun was about to rise, the bird told him to leave. The greedy(贪婪的) boy would not do so. The sun came up and he was changed into a bird.

One afternoon after school had finished , Peter and Jane were walking along the street. Suddenly they heard a big noise.
“Come on” shouted Peter.“That sounds like an accident. Let’ see what’s happened.”
They ran to where the noise came from. As soon as they got there, they could see what had happened. A small car had knocked into the side of a truck. President Barack Obama had a big pat on the back for his young daughters on Tuesday, saying they have got used to life in the White House.
After more than a year at the US presidential mansion, Malia Obama, 11, and Sasha Obama, 8, have made their dad proud with their ability to balance their private life with life in the public eye, he told NBC television.
"The happiest thing about the past year and a half has been the girls" adjustment (适应). They have just been great. They"re doing well in school," Obama said.
"They"re not as constrained. They can wander around. Their Secret Service protection is a lot more low key (低调)," he explained. "So they"ve got soccer, they"ve got basketball, they go sleep over at their friend"s houses.
"Sometimes I"ve got 12 little girls screaming on the third floor of the White House. And they made a great adjustment."
The president also admitted he was concerned about how his daughters would deal with his public life as they get a bit older.
"Now I get a little worried about them when they"re teenagers because I think that"s the time when you"re already feeling uncomfortable about your parents, and then imagine if your dad"s in the newspaper every day and people are calling him a fool. I feel a little worried about that."
"But on the other hand, Malia and Sasha have just turned out to be unbelievably well adjusted kids," Obama said.
"The thing that"s most important to me is that they are so respectful of everybody and haven"t gotten on any airs (摆架子). It’s all because of Michelle as she wouldn"t put up with (容忍) any of that stuff."

I was being interviewed by a senior manager for a big company. I told him honestly that the principal reason that I was interviewing with them was my need to keep my family in Boston. My wife had recently died of a heart attack. A job in Boston would help me reduce some pain for my 16-year-old daughter and me. It was important to me to keep her present high school.
Bruce, the interviewer, was politely kind, but he didn"t search any further. He acknowledged(承认) my loss and, with great respect, moved on to another subject. After the next round of interviews, Bruce took me to lunch with another manager. Then he asked me to take a walk with him. He told me that he had lost his wife. And, like me, he had also been married 20 years and had 3 children. I realized that he had experienced the same pain as I had and it was almost impossible to explain to someone who had not lost a loved one. He offered his business card and home phone number and suggested that, should I need help or just want someone to talk to, I should feel free to give him a call. Whether I got the job or not, he wanted me to know that he was there if I ever needed help.
From that one act of kindness, when he had no idea if we could ever see each other again, he helped our family deal with one of life"s greatest losses. He turned the normally cold business interview process into an act of earing and supporting for another person in a time of extreme need.
