When I first entered university, my aunt, who is an English professor, gave me a new English dictionary. I was 1 to see that it was an English English dictionary, also known as a monolingual(单语的) dictionary. 2 it was a dictionary intended for non-native learners, none of my classmates had one and, to be honest, I found it extremely 3 to use at first. I would look up words in the dictionary and still not fully understand the meaning. I was used to the 4 bilingual(双语的)dictionaries, in which the words are 5 both in English and Chinese. I really wondered why my aunt 6 to make things so difficult for me. Now, after studying English at university for three years, I 7 that monolingual dictionaries are 8 in learning a foreign language. As I found out, there is in fact often no perfect equivalence(对应) between two 9 in two language. My aunt even goes so far as to 10 that a Chinese “equivalent” can never give you the 11 meaning of a word in English! Therefore, she insisted that I read the definition(定义) of a word in a monolingual dictionary when I wanted to get a better understanding of its meaning. 12 , I have come to see what she meant. Using a monolingual dictionary for learners has helped me in another important way. This dictionary uses a(n) 13 number of words, around 2, 000, in its definitions. When I read these definitions, I am 14 exposed to the basic words and learn how they are used to explain objects and ideas. 15 this, I can express myself more easily in English.

One day my teacher said, “ Life is a game of chess, and the other player is time.” From that moment, I knew I had to enjoy my life.Do not waste time, because, you know, time will not come back. You cannot buy it.It is one of those things in life that you must really, really value. When you see an opportunity, take it.You might not get it back.Never let an opportunity pass. And if it is too hard, remember that in the middle of every difficulty lies an opportunity. Remember, you cannot choose how you" re going to die, or when. You can only decide how you" re going to live.Study as if you were going to live forever; live as if you were going to die tomorrow.Don" t just think of the present, but also think of your future. Your future is yet another chapter in your life and another way to live it. Every single living thing has a purpose in life."The purpose of life is a life of purpose," said Robert Byre. Tim Welford, aged 33, and Dom Mee, aged 30, both from England, were keen on (="like..." very much) rowing boats. They made a plan to row across the Pacific Ocean from Japan to San Francisco. The name of their rowboat was “Crackers”. It was about seven meters long. They set out from Japan on May 17,2001. They had rowed nearly 5,500 miles when their boat was hit by a fishing ship on September 17,2001. Luckily they both escaped unharmed, but their boat was badly damaged and they had to abandon( =" stop)their" journey. In a radio interview, Dom expressed his disappointment and explained how the accident took place. “A fishing ship came towards us with nobody on the bridge and ran us down. It all happened so quickly. I managed to dive into the water. Tim felt it would be safer to stay on board. He was trapped inside as the boat was driven under the water. Finally some people appeared on the ship and saw me in the water. I shouted at them to stop the ship and to get Tim out. When the ship stopped, I eventually saw Tim, and I was very, very happy that we were still alive. We were very disappointed that we couldn’t reach San Francisco. But we are alive. That above everything is the most important. ” 41.小题1: How long had Tim and Dom been at sea when their boat was hit by a fishing boat?A.For one month | B.For two months. | C.For three months. | D.For four months. | 42. 小题2:According to Dom, the main reason for the accident was that________.A.Tim and Dom were too careless | B.the speed of the fishing ship was too fast | C.nobody on the fishing ship saw them | D.their rowboat was not strong enough | 43. 小题3:Dom said that the most important thing in this accident was that________.A.their rowboat was not damaged | B.both of them existed after a dangerous time | C.they enjoyed this journey | D.they failed to reach San Francisco | 44. 小题4:Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?A.Some people on the fishing ship saved them. | B.Tim and Dom were going to San Francisco in the rowboat because they had no money to buy airplane tickets. | C.Dom dived into the water when the accident happened because he thought it would be dangerous to stay on board. | D.Dom told people about their dangerous experience when he was interviewed on the radio. |

It is only during the last few years that man has generally realized that in the world of nature a balance exists between all forms of life. No living thing can exist by itself: it is a part of a system (体系) in which all forms of life are joined together. If we change one part of the natural order, this will in its turn almost certainly bring about changes in some other part. The cutting down of forests reduces the supply of oxygen. The killing of weeds and insects by chemicals leads to the wide spread poisoning of animals and birds. The throwing of waste products into the ocean harm to life in the sea, while waste gases change the chemical balance of the atmosphere. And so we could go on, adding more examples, until in despair (绝望) we might feel like giving up the struggle to control and keep within limits these harmful human activities. Man is very clever at changing the world around him to satisfy his immediate needs, but not so clever at looking far ahead, or at thinking about what the future results of his action might be. 小题1:The first paragraph mainly tells us that __________.A.everything in nature can’t exist without the help of human beings | B.no living thing can exist naturally | C.all living things in nature depend on each other | D.man has well known the importance of the balance for a long time | 小题2:The examples given in the second paragraph are used to prove that __________.A.it is very important to protect forests | B.there are some living things which can exist all by themselves without change | C.all forms of life belong to a system in which all the part can be changed for one another | D.we cannot change one form of life or matter without disturbing (扰乱) the balance of nature | 小题3:In the second paragraph the underlined word “atmosphere” means __________.A.the production of chemical factories | B.the gas in the outer space | C.the mixture of gases that surrounds the earth | D.the health of the human body | 小题4:The third paragraph suggests that __________.A.man shouldn’t think only about his immediate needs without enough thought on the future results | B.man is very clever in planning his distant future | C.man often feels that he has to give up in despair | D.man is always anxious to control and keep his actives within limits |
