Life gets noisier every day and very few people can be free from noise of some sort or another. It doesn’t matter where you live—in the middle of a modern city, or a faraway village—the chances that you will be disturbed by jet aero planes, transistor radios, oil-powered engines, etc. are almost everywhere. We seem to be getting used to noise, too. Some people feel quite lonely without background music while they are working. Scientific tests have shown that total silence can be very frightening experience for human beings. However, some people enjoy listening to pop music which is very loud, and this can do harm to their eardrums(耳鼓).The noise level in some disco is far above the usual safety level for heavy industrial areas. One recent report about noise and concentration(专心) suggested that although a lot of people say that any noise disturbs their concentration, what really affects their ability to concentrate is a change in the level of noise. It goes on to say that a background noise, which doesn’t change too much (music, for example) may even help people to concentrate. 小题1:The best title for this passage is __________.A.Noisy Life | B.Background Noise | C.Disturbed Concentration | D.Changeable Noise | 小题2:From this passage, the pollution of noise __________.A.doesn’t matter much | B.has become worse everywhere | C.has become better in big cities | D.has become better in villages | 小题3: “Background music” in the passage means __________.A.music played in the concert | B.a kind of noise coming into your ears | C.music helps people to concentrate | D.music played while people are working | 小题4: Some people may have their hearing hurt __________.A.while they are in completely silence | B.while they are dancing violently | C.while they are listening to pop music | D.while they are listening to soft music | 小题5: Scientists have discovered that what prevents people from concentrating is ______.A.any kind of noise | B.great changes in level of noise | C.background noise | D.various background music |

While watching the Olympics the other night, I came across an unbelievable sight. It was not a gold medal, or a world record broken, but a show of courage. The event was swimming and started with only three men on the blocks. For one reason or another, two of them false started, so they were disqualified. That left only one to compete. It would have been difficult enough, not having anyone to race against, even though the time on the clock is important. I watched the man dive off the block and knew right away that something was wrong. I’m not an expert swimmer, but I can tell a good dive from a poor one, and this was not exactly medal quality. When he resurfaced, it was evident that the man was not out for gold – his arms were waving in an attempt at freestyle. The crowd started to laugh. Clearly this man was not a medal competitor. I listened to the crowd begin to laugh at this poor man who was clearly having a hard time. Finally he made his turn to start back. It was pitiful. He made a few desperate strokes and you could tell he was worn out. But in those few awful strokes, the crowd had changed. No longer were they laughing, but beginning to cheer. Some even began to stand and shout “Come on, you can do it!” and he did. A clear minute past the average swimmer, this young man finally finished his race. The crowd went wild. You would have thought that he had won the gold, and he should have. Even though he recorded one of the slowest times in Olympic history, this man gave more heart than any of the other competitors. Just a short year ago, he had never even swum, let alone race. His country had been invited to Sydney. 小题1:From the passage we can learn that the young man .A.made his turn to start back pitifully | B.was skillful in freestyle in the game | C.swam faster than the average swimmer | D.was not capable enough to win the medal | 小题2:The crowd changed their attitudes because .A.they felt sorry for the young man | B.they were moved by the young man’s courage | C.they wanted to show their sympathy | D.they meant to please the young man | 小题3:What’s the best title for the passage?A.Compete for Gold! | B.Try again! | C.Break a Record! | D.Go for it! |

For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context. My friend had mentioned that her father had a lot of children’s toys that he was looking to give away. She knew I had a three-year-old daughter so she thought of me first. I told her I would 36 it if I could get some nice things for my daughter, which I wouldn’t otherwise have been able to 37 . When I met her father, he began to explain that he was 38 once too and that he would hate to 39 things that could be very 40 . At first, he thought of taking everything to the Salvation Army but then he 41 to see if anyone he knew could use them first. When he was 42 me around, I saw a bed, a slide(滑板),a kitchen set and many other things that made me surprised. As my eyes were wide and beginning to tear up a bit, he told me not to feel guilty. He said I was 43 him by getting rid of them. As I was looking around, I did feel guilty, but I tried to remain more grateful than guilty because he told me to. Every time I tried to 44 him for giving my daughter all these 45 things, he would thank me right back and was grateful that these toys would be put to good use. So, sometimes when we are helped by others, the others that helped us are helped as a side –effect. In the 46 of charity , it makes sense to feel grateful, but guilt is just as normal, I know we could have lived without a slide, which is why I do feel guilty, but I am grateful all the same because my daughter 47 enjoys all these nice things!

I’ve loved my mother’s desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat doing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the world. Years later, during her final illness, mother kept different things for my sister and brother. “But the desk,” she said again, “is for Elizabeth.” I never saw her angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me; she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter. They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional(易动感情的)”. But she lived “on the surface”. As years passed and I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive me. I posted the letter and waited for her answer, none came. My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and, finally, peace. It seemed that nothing happened. I couldn’t be sure that the letter had even got to Mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not. Now the present of her desk told me that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work though she’d never been able to. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside — a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded(折叠) and refolded many times. Give me an answer, my letter asks, in any way you choose, Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words. 小题1:The writer began to love her mother’s desk _______.A.after Mother died | B.before she became a writer | C.when she was a child | D.when mother gave it to her | 小题2:The passage shows that _______.A.Mother was cold on the surface but kind in her heart to her daughter | B.Mother was too serious about everything her daughter had done | C.Mother cared much about her daughter in words | D.Mother wrote to her daughter in careful words. | 小题3: The world “gulf” in the passage means _______.A.deep understanding between the old and the young. | B.different ideas between the mother and the daughter. | C.free talks between mother and daughter. | D.part of the sea going far in land. | 小题4:What did Mother do with her daughter’s letter asking for forgiveness?A.She had never received the letter. | B.For years, she often talked about the letter. | C.She didn’t forgive her daughter at all in all her life. | D.She read the letter again and again till she died. | 小题5: What’s the best title of the passage?A.My letter to Mother | B.Mother and Children | C.My Mother’s Desk | D.Talks between Mother and me. |
