Growing up is not always easy. When we face difficulties, a spirit of depending on yourself is more useful
than crying for help. That"s what Hong Zhanhui"s story of growing from boy to man with family hardship tells
us.
Hong was born in 1982 in a poor family in Xihua County (县), Henan Province. When he was only 11, his
father became badly ill and one day he came back with an unwanted baby girl. A year later, Hong"s mother left
home. She no longer wanted to live such a poor life and face her sick husband. So everything hard fell onto the
young boy"s shoulders: to take care of his father and the sister Chenchen, and to go on to study.
Although his life was hard, Hong didn"t go away from his father and sister. He worked in part-time jobs to
feed his family. He climbed tall trees to get birds" eggs for his sister. He walked two hours at weekends to the
market to buy different things to sell around his school. A few years later, he studied at a college. To take care
of Chenchen, he worked hard to rent (租) a room near his college for her, and send her to school.
After Hong"s story went public, he became a hero in people"s eyes. But Hong refused offers from others.
He said he felt encouraged by kind offers, but he could depend on his own work.
Through his hard life, he has grown up from boy to man.

阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答问题或翻译句子。      As young students, you have many dreams. These dreams can be very big, such as winning the Nobel
Prize. They can also be small. You may just want to become one of the ten best students in you class. Once
you find a dream, what do you do with it? Do you ever try to make your dream real?
Follow Your Heart by Australian writer Andrew Matthews tells us that making our dreams real is life"s
biggest challenge.
You may think you"re not very good at some school subjects, or that it is impossible for you to become
a writer. These kinds of ideas stop you from getting your dream, the book says.
In fact, everyone can make his dream come true. The first thing you must do is to remember what the
dream is.
Don"t let it leave your heart. Keep telling yourself what you want every day and your dream will come
true faster because a big dream is, in fact, many small dreams.
You must also never give up your dream. There will be difficulties on the way to your dreams. But the
biggest difficulty comes from yourself. You need to decide what is the most important. Stud-ying instead
of watching TV will help you to get better exam results, while saving five yuan instead of buying an ice-cream
means you can buy a new book.
As you get closer to your dream, it may change a little. This is good as you have the chance to learn
something more useful and find new hobbies. 1. Where is the writer of Follow Your Heart from?
    ___________________________________________________________________
2. What is the first thing to make the dream come true?
    ___________________________________________________________________
3. In fact, a big dream is many small dreams, isn"t it?

According to the recent survey, only forty percent of children in our school feel happy. Why? Do you
know what "happiness" means? A lot of money? No homework every day? High marks or anything else?
In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heat into it. When you are in trouble at school,
your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care
of your life and your health; when you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you; when you
do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do something good to
others, you will feel happy, too. All these are happiness. If you notice a bit of them, you can see that happiness
is always around you. All these can"t be bought with money. It"s a feeling of your heart. When you come
across difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have more chances to challenge
yourself.
As the saying goes, life is a revolving (旋转的) door. When it closes, it also opens. If you take every
chance you get, you can be a happy and lucky person.

The teacher stood before his class of 30 students and was about to hand out the final exam papers. "I
know how hard you have all worked to prepare for this test," he said. "Arid because I know you are all able
to understand this material, I am ready to offer a B to anyone who would prefer not to take the test."
A number of students jumped up to thank the teacher and left the classroom. The teacher looked at the
remaining (余下的) students and said, "Does anyone else want to get a B? This is your last chance." Two
more students decided to go. Seven students stayed. The teacher then handed out the papers. There were
only three sentences which were typed on the paper: Congratulations! You have received an A in this class.
Keep believing in yourself.
I never had a teacher who gave a test like that, but I think that it is a test that any teacher could and
should give. Students who do not have confidence in what they have learned are B students at most.
The same is true for students in real life. The A students are those who believe in what they are doing
because they have learned from both successes and failures. They have learned life"s lessons, whether from
formal education or from even is in their lives, and have become better people. Scientists say that by the age
of eight, 80% of what we believe about ourselves has already been formed. You are a big kid now, and you
realize that you have some limits (局限). However, there is nothing you can"t do or leant to be. Sir Edmund
Hillary, the first person to reach the top of Mount Qomolangma (珠穆朗玛峰) said, "We do not conquer the
mountain, but ourselves."
1. Why did some students leave the classroom?
A. Because they were happy with the mark the teacher would give them.
B. Because they were allowed to take another easier exam later on.
C. Because they knew the teacher didn"t like them to take the test.
D. Because they thought the exam was too easy to be worth a try.
2. Why did the teacher give the remaining students an A?
A. Because they answered all the questions in the exam correctly.
B. Because they had been promised an A by the teacher before.
C. Because they were confident in what they had learned.
D. Because they had been working hard for each exam.
3. What does the underlined word "conquer" mean in the passage?
A. 发现
B. 控制
C. 探索
D. 征服
4. What is the writer"s purpose of writing the passage?
A. He wants us to know what our limits are.
B. He wants us to learn to believe in ourselves.
C. He wants us to receive formal education.
D. He wants us to learn from B students.
