To Max
Today we had to let you go,
It broke our hearts in two,
We had to leave you at that place,
Alone and feeling blue,
The only thing that we could do,
Was to drive back home and cry,
For we just couldn’t keep you,
No matter (无论) how we tried,
You’ll never be forgotten,
As long as we two live,
You gave us all the love,
A little dog could give,
Looking at your small hutch,
We know you are not with us,
From this moment on,
We begin to miss you much,
We’ll think about you often,
And wanna know where you are,
And in our hearts we’ll hear your bell,
Tinkling from afar (远处).

One afternoon I toured an art museum while waiting for my husband to finish a business meeting. I was looking forward to a quiet viewing of the wonderful paintings.
A young couple were viewing the paintings in front of me and chatting with each other without stop. I watched them for a moment and noticed the man’s wife was doing all the talking. I was surprised to see that the man was so patient and could stand his wife’s words, but I still moved on.
I met them several times when I moved through the different rooms of art. Each time I heard she continued talking about the paintings, I moved away quickly.
I was buying some gifts in the museum shop when the couple came near to the gate. Before they left, the man reached into his pocket and pulled out something brown. He turned it into a long stick and then tapped(轻敲) his way into the coatroom to get his wife’s jacket.
“He’s a brave man,” a clerk beside me said. “Most of us would give up if we became blind at such a young age. During his treatment, he made a promise that his life wouldn’t change. So, as before, he and his wife come in whenever there’s a new art show.”
“But what does he get out of the art?” I asked. “He can’t see.”
“Can’t see? You’re wrong. He sees a lot , more than you or I do.” The clerk said, “His wife describes each painting, so he can see it in his head.”
I learned something about patience(耐心), courage and love that day. I saw the patience of a young wife describing paintings to a person who was blind and the courage of a husband who would not allow blindness to make his life different. And I saw the love shared by two people as I watched this couple walk away holding each other’s hands.

When I was young, my father used to grow carnations — a kind of flower that was red, pink and white. He took care of them with much love and devotion (挚爱). When he came home from work every day, he would enjoy watching them. And he used to tell us, “No one should touch my flowers.”
One day, my younger sister Clemence, who loved Dad very much, wanted to help him. So she cut the carnations from their stems (枝干) one by one and arranged them on the ground. She believed that Dad would be very pleased to see them that way. When Mom and I realized what my sister had done, we became completely speechless. However, my sister didn’t know why no one showed her any appreciation (欣赏). When Dad came back, he went straight to watch the flowers as usual. Seeing his flowers lying on the ground like dead animals, he was surprised at first. He looked towards the street to see if it was any of the neighbor’s children who could have done it. Then he looked at Mom in silence. Finally Mom, who always taught us to tell the truth, said, “No bad neighbors did this great job, only your lovely daughter Clemence.” Dad’s face changed into a smile and then he said, “Do I have better flowers than my lovely daughter?” My younger sister smiled and hugged Dad strongly.

It was a cold afternoon in winter. My oldest son, Stephen, was at school, and Reed, my husband, at work. My         little ones were sitting around the kitchen table. Tom was perfecting a paper plane, while Sam was         on an oil painting.
But Laura, our only daughter, sat quietly and was         in her project. Every once in a while she would ask how to         the name of someone in our family, then carefully form the letters one by one. Next, she would add flowers with small items. She finished off each with a sun in the upper right hand corner. Holding them at eye level, she let out a long sigh (叹息) of       .
“What are you doing, Honey?” I asked. She looked quickly at her brother before looking back at me. “It’s a         .” she said, covering up her work with her hands.
Next, she put her work into a box. When she had finished, she disappeared up the stairs.
It wasn’t until later that evening that I           a “mailbox” taped onto the doors to each of our bedrooms. There were little notes saying that she loved all of us. She hadn’t         Sam or baby Paul. They are pages of colored scenes including flowers with happy faces. “He can’t read yet,” she whispered (低声说), “        he can look at the pictures.” Each time I received one of my little girl’s gifts, it         my heart. I was touched at how carefully she paid attention to what wrong happened to us. When Stephen lost a baseball game, there was a letter telling him she thought he was the best ballplayer in the whole world. After I had a         day, there was a message thanking me for my efforts.
This same little girl is grown now, driving off every day to the state college, but some things about her have       changed. Yesterday I found a love note next to my bedside. “Thanks for always being there for me, Mom,” it read, “I’m glad that we’re the best friends.”
There are angels among us. I know I live with one.
