language is always changing. We need new words for new inventions and new ideas. Different words come
into use, or older words are used in a new way.
English can change by borrowing words from other language. "Tomato" was borrowed from Mexico, the
word "coffee" came from Turkey, and "tea"came from China. Now new space and science words are being
borrowed from other countries, too.
New words are also made by adding two words together. "Postman" and "grandfather" are words made
up of two parts. Sometimes new words are shorter forms of older words. The word"photo"was made from
photograph by cutting off the front part."Smog"was made by using only the first two and last two letters from
the words "smoke" and "fog".
The names of people and products can become new words. Our sandwich was named after a man named
"Sandwich".
B. to make up some stories

beauties of the countryside. This was not because the woods and fields were always far away, but because they
were too far away from the city to permit people to make a day trip between morning and nightfall.
In 1907, a young German schoolmaster had an idea which changed this state of affairs. He decided to turn
his little schoolhouse into a dormitory for the summer holidays. Anyone who brought his sleeping bag and
cooking equipment along could stay there for a very small quantity of money. The idea was a success. A few
years later, the schoolhouse was much too small to hold the many young people who wanted to stay there. As
a result, a dormitory was set up in an old castle nearby. This was the first Young Hostel.
Today, young students and workers of every country can meet in the hostels and get to know each other.
When young people arrive at a hostel, they have only to show their card of membership in a hostel organization
in their own country. This card will permit them to use the facilities of hostels all over the world for a very low
price.
Often, at the evening meal, a group of boys and girls from various parts of the country or the world will
happen to meet at the same hostel. They may put their food together and prepare a dinner with many kinds of
dishes. Sometimes a program will be organized after the meal, with dances, songs, or short talks followed by a
question period. One can learn a lot of things about other places, just by meeting people who come from those
places. For this reason, a few weeks spent"hostelling"can just be as useful a part of one"s education as classes
in school.
y first come to India. When they talk to an Indian, he often shakes his head. They might think that the Indian
does not like what he said, but on the contrary, he is expressing agreement.
The Indians have a habit of shaking their heads slightly when they talk to somebody. It doesn"t mean "No",
but "Yes". If a person doesn"t know this, it might cause misunderstanding (误解).
At one time a foreigner in India told his driver who was an Indian to take him to his office. The driver
shook his head. The foreigner said his request again and again and the driver still shook his head. At last, the
foreigner shouted angrily, "Drive me to my office at once!" The driver said in a low voice, "Yes, sir," smiling
and shaking his head again at the same time.
B. "No"… "Yes"
C. "Yes"… "Yes"
cold. As the world has changed, the word has had many different meanings.
"Cool" can be used to express feelings of interest in almost anything. When you see a famous car in
the street, maybe you will say, "It"s cool." You may think, "He is so cool," when you see your favourite
football player. And here is an interesting story we can use to show one of the different ways the word is
used. A teacher asked her students to write about the waterfall (瀑布) they had visited. One student wrote,
"It"s so cool." Maybe he thought it was the best way to show what he saw and felt. But the story also
shows a scarcity (缺乏) of words. Without "cool", some people have no words to show the same meaning.
So can you think of many other words that makes your life as colourful as the word "Cool" ? If you can,
I think that is also very cool.
B. no meaning
C. only one meaning
D. the same meaning
Here"s a simple test. Imagine you are planning to hold a meeting at four o"clock. What time should you expect
your foreign business friends to arrive? If they are Germans, they"ll arrive on time. If they are Americans,
they"ll probably be 15 minutes early. If they are Englishmen, they"ll be 15 minutes late, and you should allow
up to an hour for the Italians.
The British seemed to think since the English language was widely used in the world, people would
always understand what they do. However, they found they were completely wrong. For example, the British
are happy to have a business lunch and discuss business matters and have a drink during the meal. The
Japanese prefer not to work while eating. Lunch is a time for them to relax and get to know each other and
they don"t drink at lunchtime. The Germans like to talk business before dinner. The French like to eat first
and talk afterwards. They have to be well fed and watered before they discuss anything.
