                                                             The Statue of Liberty
                                                                  自由女神铜像

In the water around New York City is a very small island called Liberty Island. On Liberty Island there
is a very special statue called the Statue of Liberty. It is one of the most famous sights in the world.
The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States. The statue
was made by a French sculptor (雕塑家) named Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. 1 The inner support system
was designed by Gustave Eiffel, the same man who made the famous Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Liberty, of course, means freedom, and the Statue of Liberty was given to the United States to celebrate
the one-hundredth anniversary (周年纪念日) of U.S. independence (独立) from England. The statue was
built in France, taken apart piece by piece, and then rebuilt in the United States. 2 It was opened for the
public on October 28, 1886.
As you might expect, the statue is very big. Visitors can ride an elevator (电梯) from the ground to the
bottom of the statue. If they want to, they can then walk up the 168 steps to reach the head of the statue
where they can look out and enjoy the beautiful sight (景色) of the city of New York.

For most people, the word "fashion" means "clothes". But people ask question, "What clothes are
fashion?" And they use the adjective "fashionable" in the same way: "she was wearing a fashionable
coat." "His shirt was really a fashionable color."
But of course there are fashions in many things, not only in clothes. There are fashions in holidays,
in restaurants, in films and books. There are even fashions in school subjects, jobs and in languages.
Fashions change as time goes. If you look at pictures of people or things from the past, you will feel
that fashions have always changed. An English house of 1750 was different from one of 1650. A
fashionable man in 1780 looked very different from his grandson in 1860. Today fashions change very
quickly. Some of this is natural. We hear about things much more quickly than in the past. Newspapers,
radios, telephones and television send information from one country to another in a few hours.
New fashions mean that people will buy new things, so you see there is money in fashion.

                                                   The Channel Tunnel (英吉利海峡隧道)
In 1858, a French engineer, Aime Thome de Gamond, arrived in England with a plan for a twenty-one

Channel. This platform    3    as a port and a railway station. The tunnel would be well-ventilated (通风好的)
if tall chimneys were built    4    sea-level (海平面). In 1860, a better plan was put forward (提出) by an
Englishman, William Low. He suggested that a    5    railway tunnel should be built. This would solve the
problem of ventilation,    6    if a train    7    this tunnel, it would draw in (吸入) fresh air behind it. Forty-two
years later a tunnel was actually begun. If, at the time, the British had not feared invasion (入侵), it would
have been completed. Recently, there has again    8    great interest in the idea of a Channel Tunnel.
