完形填空。    Have you ever planted a few trees on Tree Planting Day? Each year, millions of people, both   1  , plant a
lot of trees. But this may not be the best way to make your home a   2   place.
Last week we visited a park in Hebei. We were   3   to find most of the trees had been burned. The workers
told us that the trees   4   soon after they were planted because they weren"t watered well enough.   5   workers
burned them and cleaned the place for   6   trees to be planted this year.   7   a card found in one of the dead
trees, a student wrote:"I hope this tree will grow up with me to   8   the backbone (栋梁) of our country."
The workers said that the survival (存活) of the trees was really more important than   9   trees were planted.
Some people in Beijing now have a new idea that they can donate (损赠) some money and let professionals
(专业人士) plant and  10  the trees.

There are seas, lakes and forests on the earth. There are cities, towns and farms, too. All these things
are environments. The environment is everything around you. It can be living (有生命的), like a forest.
It can be non-living (无生命的),   1   a rock or a mountain.
No living thing can live alone. Every living thing depends (依赖于) on other things in its environment.
When something   2  , it affects (影响) something else. If a non-living; thing like water becomes   3   to
find, plants will be affected. If all plants   4  , the animals that eat plants will be affected.
Weather, such as temperature, wind and rain, can change an environment.   5   can change an
environment, too. Some things that people do cause no change or only a small change in the environment.
For example, people can walk through the forest and just travel around. They can cut down only a few
trees and   6   change the environment very much. On the other hand, some things that people do
cause   7   changes. Sometimes they can change a whole environment by cutting down a forest.
Not all changes are bad. If we cut down a forest to build houses or plant crops, this may not be bad.
But what would happen if we cut down all trees in all forests or if we didn"t   8   them and plant something
else?
It is clear that people are able to change an environment. This is why it is important to think about the
changes before we make   9  . Let"s work together to  10  it clean and healthy.

What time can you have breakfast? Breakfast is very important and you must eat it. People eat
breakfast in one or two hours after they get up. It"s good to eat breakfast before nine o"clock.. Some
people don"t eat anything in the morning. Some are very busy. Others want to be thin. But both (两个
都) reasons are bad. It"s difficult to work or study well without breakfast, and it can"t help one get thin.
In fact, if one doesn"t eat breakfast, it may even make one fat. In the morning, you must eat some good
food. You can eat some eggs, some bread and drink some milk. You can eat some chicken as well. If
you get up late after nine o"clock, you still must eat breakfast. You can eat it in one or two hours after

Do you know all birds protect themselves by always listening and  watching out for danger? At the
smallest sign of it,  they will fly away.  Birds that cannot fly are often able to swim fast, or run quickly.
Some birds make themselves look bigger and more dangerous by fluffing (抖动) their feathers.
Another important protection for many birds is their colors. Their  feathers often have colors that
match the things around their nests  (巢). Some birds change colors with the seasons.  In the winter they
are white to match the snow.  In the summer they are brown to match the ground.
People sometimes kill birds without meaning to.When people cut down forests to build houses and
factories, they destroy the homes and food of birds. If the birds have nowhere else to go and nothing to
 eat, they will die out.
Pollution may cause some birds to die.  Birds that eat fish from polluted water get poison in their
bodies. Then they cannot lay healthy eggs.  New birds can"t be born.
Now people protect birds by passing the laws to control hunting and pollution, by setting up some
special parks where all the birds are safe from hunters, and by teaching people to care about birds rather
than kill them.

All of us know trees are useful to man in three very important ways:  they give us wood and other
products, they give us shade, and the most  important of all, they help to prevent droughts and floods.
In many parts of the world, however, people have not realized the  importance of trees to us.
Two thousand years ago, a rich and powerful country cut down its  trees to build its warships, with
which it gained itself an empire (帝国).  It gained the empire, but without its trees, its soil became hard
and poor. When the empire fell into pieces,  the home country found itself faced by floods and hunger.
Even when a government realizes the importance of forests,  it is difficult for it to make villagers see
this.  The villagers want wood to cook  their food, and they can earn money by making things or selling
wood to  the town people.  They are usually too lazy or too careless to plant and  look after new trees.
So unless the government does something to control  and also to educate the people,  the forests will
slowly disappear.
1. The most important service of trees is that _______.
A. they help people to get rich
B. they provide people with shade
C. they help to prevent droughts and floods
D. they can be used to build warships
2. The empire fell into pieces because _______.
A. it had lost all of its warships
B. it couldn"t provide its people with enough money
C. it didn"t ask people to plant many trees
D. its people couldn"t make a living
3. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Many people haven"t realized the importance of forests.
B. The government should do something to protect the forests.
C. The empire became rich and strong with its powerful warships.
D. People often don"t take good care of the new trees they have planted.
4. The forests will disappear if _______.
A. the government realizes the importance of the forests
B. the villagers realize the importance of the forests
C. the government doesn"t do something to control or to educate the people
D. the villagers don"t cut trees down to make money
5.  The writer"s purpose in writing the text is _______.
A.  to give us advice on how to protect forests
B.  to tell the story of the empire two thousand years ago
C.  to call on people to do something to protect forests
D.  to tell the people to plant as many trees as possible
