can eat and others often forget to turn off the lights when they leave the classroom.
They say they can afford these things. But I don"t agree with them. Waste can bring a lot of
problems. Although China is rich in some resources(资源) , we are short of (缺乏) others, for
example, fresh water. It is reported that we will have no coal(煤) or oil to use in 100 years.
So if we go on wasting our resources, what can we use in the future and where can we move?
Think about it. I think we should say no to the students who waste things every day. Everybody
should stop wasting as soon as possible.
In our everyday life, we can do many things to prevent waste from happening, for example,
turn off the water taps(水龙头) when we finish washing, turn off the lights when we leave the
classroom, try not to order more food than we need, and so on. Little by little, everything
will be changed. Waste can be stopped one day, if we do our best.

Trees provide man with fruits and building materials in the form of wood. Without trees itwould be
impossible to build houses, boats and even bridges. Furniture such as tables, chairs andbeds is made of
wood.
In the tropics (热带地区) where it is very hot all through the year, trees protect man fromthe terrible
heat. They are also useful in preventing good and rich top soil from being washed away during heavy rains which are so common in the tropics.
If there were no tree or vegetation of some kinds to hold back the soil with their roots, heavy rains
would wash away the rich soil that is so important and necessary to agriculture(农业). The result is that
the land becomes a desert.
There are so many desert areas in the world. A long time ago these desert areas must havebeen very
rich fertile(肥的) areas, but since our ancestors in the distant past do not have enough knowledge about
science of nature, they cut down all the trees in the areas where they lived and never planted new ones.
By and by, the rich soil was blown and washed away by strong winds and heavy rains. In the end the land was turned into deserts where nothing could grow.

Life today has brought new problems. One of the biggest is pollution. Water pollution has made our
rivers and lakes dirty. It kills fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us talk louder and become angry more easily. Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution: It"s bad to all living things in
the world.
Cars, planes and factories all pollute our air every day. Sometimes the polluted air is so thick that it is
like a quilt over a city. This kind of quilt is called smog(烟雾).
Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. Factories must now clean their water before it is
poured into rivers; they mustn"t blow dirty smoke into the air.
We need to do many other things. We can put waste things in the dustbin instead of throwing it on the ground. We can go to work by bus or with our friends in the same car. If there are fewer people driving,
there will be less pollution. Rules are not enough. Every person must help to fight pollution.
