I can’t remember when I started collecting litter(垃圾). But it was when I got tired of seeing litter near my home and realized that no one else was going to pick it up.
I live close to a forest in Ohio, America. I can walk there in three minutes! I used to love going there to play with my dog. But one day there was so much litter there that I became very unhappy. I decided to clean up the forest. I wanted to feel happy going there again.
I made my first trip to clean the forest that afternoon. I took a big black rubbish bag with me. Ten minutes after starting to pick up litter, my bag was full! It had cans, bottles, broken glass and newspapers in it.
Since that first trip three years ago, I’ve gone to the forest four times a year to pick up litter. I’m often there for three hours. It makes me feel great to do something for the environment.
After each trip, I look at all the litter I’ve found. If any of it is recyclable(可回收的), I keep it. I can’t understand why people drop litter. But I will keep picking it up until they stop dropping it.
I know I can only do a small bit to help the earth, but I still think it is important.

Why do we need to throw less away? There are two reasons. One is that some resources(资源)are nonrenewable(不可再生的). That means there is only a certain amount of that resource in the world. One example of these resources is oil. When we use up all the oil in the world, there will be no more.
There is a second reason for throwing less away. All of our trash has to be put somewhere. Often, it is put into garbage dumps(垃圾场). Much of that trash will be there for hundreds of years. The dumps ill be filled up with all this trash.
There are three ways to cut down on trash.
One way is to recycle. When you recycle something, it means it is made into another shape and used again. Old newspapers may become paper bags. A glassware can be melted(熔化)and made into a bottle.
Another way to cut down on trash is to reuse things. You can wash and use a bottle again that can hold mustard(芥末酱)or something else.
The third way to cut down on trash is to reduce the amount of trash you make, for example, stopping buying things that you don’t need in the first place. That reduces the amount of the earth’s resources.

A ban on smoking in most public places goes into effect(效果) on Sunday in China - home to a third of the world"s smokers. That means around 300 million smokers will no longer be allowed to light their cigarettes in the "enclosed public places." These include hotels, restaurants, theaters and public transport waiting rooms. The ban does not cover offices or factories.
The campaign is aimed at controlling(控制) the number of deaths from smoking-related illnesses, running at a million a year. The human body is a living machine, and, like all machines, it needs “fuel” to supply it with energy. This is provided by the food we eat. But how much do we need to stay healthy?
The energy value of food is usually measured in calories(卡). A calorie is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 kg of water by 1℃. The number of calories people need per day is different, as the picture shows. Also, the number of calories you use at any one moment normally depends on the activity you are in. For example, you need more calories for standing than for sitting, more for running than for walking, and so on.
The energy in food is in the form of three kinds of chemical materials—carbohydrate(碳水化合物), protein(蛋白质) and fat. Carbohydrate provides 3.8 Cal /gm of the energy, protein 4.0 Cal/gm, and fat 8.8 Cal/gm. Each food contains different amounts of these materials, as the round pictures show.
