Lien Chan, visited the mainland and three days later, President Hu Jintao held talks with him. This is the first
meeting in 56 years and may help to bring peace across the Taiwan Straits (海峡).
How much do you know about this beautiful island? The island faces Fujian. The shortest distance from
Taiwan to Fujian is 130 kilometers across the Taiwan Straits. A ship can cover it in four hours.
As the biggest island, Taiwan is still only about one-sixth the size of Hunan. Around it, there are also lots
of smaller ones, like Penghu Islands and Diaoyu Islands.
Taiwan is rich in natural resources (资源). Half of the island is covered with forests, and it has many kinds
of agricultural products (农产品), like rice and tea.
Taiwanese people are mostly descendants (后代) of people from Fujian and Guangdong. They still use the
language from their old hometowns. They also celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival.
At the Spring Festival, they even eat dumplings!
Once, communications across the Straits were not so good. In 1979, Beijing put forward an idea that
Taiwanese people should use better ways of communicating and build better business and transportation.
There is now more business and tourism (旅游业) across the Straits. On July 4, 2008, the first direct flights
between Taiwan and five mainland cities such as Beijing, Shanghai Nanjing, Guangzhou and Xiamen started up.
As we all know, Taiwan is always an important part of our country. We are one big family. But some top
leaders in Taiwan like Lee Tenghui and Chen Shuibian have been trying to make Taiwan an independent (独立)
country. This made people on both sides angry, because it goes against the history and the wishes of all the
Chinese.

left millions homeless? On the twelfth day after the earthquake, Premier Wen Jiabao said, "A new Wenchuan
will rise from the ruins (废墟)." Now his words have come true. Three years has passed and the worst-hit
areas in Sichuan have risen from the ruins.
So far, 95% of the reconstruction projects (重建项目) have been completed. Nearly 3,000 schools, 1,000
hospitals and more than 5 million homes have been built. Now everyone has been provided with a home, a job
and social security (社保).
Dong Xinjun, a villager in Qingchuan, said volunteers from Zhejiang taught him how to grow mushrooms
and now he makes about 3,000 yuan more than before every year.
Zhu Lihu, the headmaster of a village primary school in Qingchuan, told us that teaching equipment had
been greatly improved. Now they have new classrooms, a library and a computer room with 20 computers.
On May 8th, 2011, Premier Wen Jiabao made his 10th visit to Sichuan Province after the earthquake. He
visited a lot of middle schools and neighborhoods. At Beichuan Middle School, Premier Wen embraced a
student named Zheng Haiyang, who lost both of his legs in the earthquake. The students told Premier Wen
that their new school was very beautiful. And they would never forget that it was built with the hearts and
strength of people across the whole country.

their products (产品) and the price of these products in the markets is lower, too. Thus they give us better
values. At the same time, new technology and science are always at work, improving the quality of products.
In this way, better quality products at good values are one after the other being brought to the people of all
income groups.
As an example of how this works, when facial tissues, pieces of thin soft paper that you use to blow your
nose, were first put on the market in 1924, they were made in small numbers and sold at 60 cents per box of
200. People liked these facial tissues immediately and began asking for them when they went into different
stores.
Because there was such a market for the product, producers began making tissues in larger and larger
numbers. Because the producers were making tissues in greater numbers, the costs were lowered, so that the
cost of tissues went down. At the same time, the quality of facial tissues was improving, because more
producers went into the business of making tissues, and each producer tried to make his product better than
his competitors (竞争者). Today, instead of costing 60 cents, a box of 200 facial tissues costs around
one-third of that price, and they are both softer and stronger.
When people are free to compete, when they are free to make more things and make them better, we all
feel much better.

You wouldn"t steal a car. You would never rob (抢劫) a bank or pick someone"s pocket. But you may
be another kind of thief.
If you have ever bought a disc for 15 yuan or less, then you have helped to rob artists or musicians of
their intellectual properly rights (知识产权).
Last Thursday was World Intellectual Property Day. Activities to tell people about intellectual property
rights were held around the country.
Intellectual property includes inventions, literary (文学的) and artistic works, names, and pictures. They
are of little value (价值) if they are not read, seen and used.
While the cost of copying discs is very small, authors, singers and actors have to spend a lot of money
and time making a new product. That"s why they have the right to make money from their work.
So buying pirated (盗版的) music of Jay Chou and Jolin Tsai is like stealing from them, paying them no
respect for their hard work.
If Jay Chou cannot make money from his work, he may not make anything else. But those who make
pirated goods are becoming rich without doing any hard work.
The authors should ask for a fair price for their work. Earlier this year there was much talk about how
much KTV clubs should pay the music companies for using their songs.
The copyright fee (版权费) also should be fair to the users. That"s good for the music"s popularity and
society as well.

"People are afraid to spend now," said Linda Morrow, who owns a shoe and handbag store."They don"t
know what the future will bring." During the financial crisis (金融危机), several of the country"s biggest
banks have been forced to sell or close. This has made lots of Americans afraid to buy expensive goods.
Samira Marino, a restaurant owner in Miami, has found everyone is ordering water instead of juice and
more people are sharing meals.
In more than two-dozen interviews with The Associated Press across the country last month, Americans
talked about their concerns, from worries about small businesses to doubts (怀疑) about simply making ends
meet (维持生计).
The crisis began last year. Experts think it was because US banks lend money too easily. Last year a lot
of people and companies, who borrowed money, have found themselves unable to pay it back. This left the
banks, as well as the people who put their money in the banks, without money. Since the banks borrowed
money between themselves and even across borders (国界), the whole world was in trouble.
This month the US government agreed on a $700 billion plan to try to save the financial market. But no
one is sure whether it will help or not. President George W. Bush has warned it will take some time. Last
week top finance officials from 20 countries promised to work together to find a way out of the money

companies. First, there were traditional companies which sold things in stores. Then, there were Internet
companies which didn"t have stores; they sold things only over the Net.
Traditional companies didn"t want to lose any business. Quickly, they created their own websites and
began selling things over the Net. These are the so-called "brick and click" companies. Many stores are
made of brick, and you click on your mouse to buy things with your computer. That"s where the name
"brick and click" comes from.
By the late 1990"s, e-businesses like Amazon.com, Buy.com, and eToys.com were in trouble. Their
profits were not very high, and there was a lot of competition. Many of these businesses lost a lot of money,
and in 2000, many businesses were out of business. Why are brick and click companies, like Barnes and
Noble, Toys RUs, and Walmart 50 successful? First, many customers know and trust their names. Their
websites, like Walmart.com, are easy to remember. These companies also have a lot of experience. They
know how to run a successful business.
In the world of e-commerce (电子商务), companies are fighting for every dollar and every customer.
