number of hours of television they watch every day. The technology is nicknamed "Square-Eyes". It is a tiny,
computerized sensor (感应器) that fits into children"s shoes. It measures the number of steps the child takes
during the day and sends the information to the family computer. Software then tells the child how many hours
of TV he or she can watch that evening. One hundred steps equal (等于) one minute of TV. If children use up
all of their viewing time, they must do more walking.
The designer Gillian Swan says this will help children to include exercise in their daily life from an early age.
Ten years ago children were healthier because they played outside with their friends. But today"s children spend
too much time in front of TV and don"t exercise. This means children have weight problems and become fat.

Agriculture Organization (FAO) (联合国粮农组织). More than 100 countries are holding special events. All of
these aim to celebrate the establishment of the FAO in 1945. The theme chosen for this year"s World Food Day
is "Water: Source (资源) of Food Security".
A UN report says that over 6 million people have died from hunger and related diseases so far this year
alone. More than 850 million people, or about one in seven, around the world do not get enough food, and the
need for food will increase as the world"s population grows. The UN also reports that by year 2030, the world
may need 60% more food. Most of that increase will have to come from agriculture supported by water
irrigation (灌溉). However, fresh water is already in short supply in many countries.
Jacques Diouf, the director of the FAO, says that there are 20 countries that do not have enough water to
produce enough food for their populations. Ten nations use more than 40% of their total fresh water for
agriculture. He fears that the problem will only become worse as the need for water by people and by industry
grows. So water is one of the most important things in the world today.

penguins have decreased (减少) by 30% since 1987.
Penguins are black and white birds that live in the southern part of the world. They are common in South
America, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. Many live near cold waters. But some live near warm waters
in Galapagos Islands. Penguins cannot fly, but they are fine swimmers. Penguins eat fish and krill (磷虾).
The warming of the earth is the decrease in penguin populations. The heating of the air has caused ocean
waters to become warmer. Higher water temperatures have reduced the supply of fish and krill. Some years later
these birds are completely unable to reproduce (繁殖). Besides, many adult penguins die of hunger.
Widespread (广泛的) fishing, exploration for oil and oil leaks (漏) also make penguins be in danger.
Poisonous organisms (生物) in ocean water are another danger. Penguins also have their enemies, including
wild dogs, sharks, seals and sea lions.
News about penguins is not all bad, however. Several years ago, oil leaking from a ship hurt 40% of the
penguins in South Africa. The penguins became covered with oil. But thousands of people helped clean and treat
the birds well. Then they returned the penguins to the wild. Now these South African penguins are reproducing
in higher numbers than before the oil leaking.
B. can be found near Oceania (大洋洲)
C. eat fish only
D. live only in cold waters.
B. Widespread fishing.
C. Human"s killing.
D. Warming of the oceans.
B. Because people sent a lot of penguins to the wild.
C. Because people helped the penguins.
D. Because people treated the penguins well.
B. Penguins May Be in Danger of Disappearing
C. Help the Disappearing Penguins.
D. The Number of the Penguins in South Africa is Getting More Than Before

Orlando, Florida — Is it hard for you to get up early and get ready for classes? Some students at Winter Park High School can quickly get up just in their clothes for sleeping and go to class in their own bedrooms. Of course, their teachers and classmates do not see them because all their class work is on the computer. This school, the state"s only online school, has 250 students who are taking classes at home by computer. "I feel a lot more comfortable at home," says Luke Levesque, a 16-year-old student who is taking a computer class online. He thinks the school"s computer lad is so noisy that he can"t study well. "Home is much better," he says. When a student is ready to begin a class, he or she turns on the computer, reads the teacher"s instructions (指示), and begins working on the lessons for the day. What happens if a student has a question for the teacher? Or the teacher wants to say something about the work a student is doing? The student and the teacher can talk to each other every day through e-mail or by telephone. For example, when Luke opened his daily e-mail from the teacher, it contained (包含) her instructions for the day"s computer lesson. When he finished, he sent his work back by e-mail to her for correcting. Is it easy for students to cheat on tests when they"re working at home? The teachers have already thought about this. They make students take their final exams in person in the classroom. If this first online program goes well, in three years Florida"s high school students will be able to take all their classes by computer. When that happens, students will be able to get their high school diplomas (文凭) without having to set foot in a classroom. | |||
