I am writing this letter in my room. I can see the Seine (塞纳河) from my window. It"s just below my
window and it is beautiful.
I am staying at a student hotel some miles from the center of Paris. I have got a big room and I use it as
a bedroom, a study and a sitting room! There is a kitchen in the hotel, but I don"t often cook there. I usually
have my meals at the university. The food there is good and cheap.
The university is only two stops away from here. It takes ten minutes to get there on foot. Most of the
other students ride bicycles, but I haven"t got one.

our town.
Do write if you have time.

Many serious accidents happen in people"s homes. Could you please prevent these accidents? Yes. Many
accidents happen because people are careless. So be careful! Here are some tips about safety.
·Don"t stand on chairs. Many people may fall off chairs and hurt themselves.
·Keep the floor dry, and you won"t slip (滑) or fall.
·Be away from matches. Even a cigarette (香烟) can easily start a fire. Don"t use water to put out fires.
Use salt instead.
·Be careful with knives! Many people cut themselves in the kitchen. Never touch the broken bottles, doors
or windows. Glass can also cause the most serious cuts.
·Don"t keep poisons (毒药) in the kitchen.
·Never use electrical appliances (电器设备) in the shower. Dry the floor before you use them, or
electricity can hurt you!
·Keep children away from hot water and hot drinks. They can be dangerous. But adults often forget it.

the light changes. No one jaywalks (乱穿马路) there.
On those narrow paths with no traffic lights people would stop to give way to a coming car. Strangely,
the drivers always signal for the pedestrians to go first, either at busy, noisy downtown or quiet suburban
(郊区的) paths no policeman is seen directing the traffic.
Even at the gate of the City Government Hall, no policemen are there guarding. Anyone can enter in office

black-uniformed policemen keeping the order.

every word of it. (3) There are hundreds of skills to help you read more in less time. Here are two skills that I
think are especially good.
Preview-if it"s long and hard. Previewing is especially useful for getting a general idea of heavy reading like
long magazine articles and business reports. Here"s how to preview.
●Read the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs carefully.
●Then read only the first sentence of the other paragraphs.
Previewing doesn"t give you all the details. (4) It keeps you from spending time on things you don"t really
want-or need-to read.
Skim-if it"s short and simple. Skimming is a good way to get a general idea of light reading --like popular
magazines or the sports and entertainment of your daily paper. Here"s how to skim.
●Get your eyes to move fast. Sweep them across each line.
●Pick up only a few key words in each line.
Everybody skims differently. You and I may not pick up the same words when we skim the same piece, but
we"ll get a similar idea of what it"s all about.

(交流) with words. Do you think you can communicate without words? A smile on your face shows you are
happy or friendly. Tear in your eyes tell others that you are sad. When you put up your hands in class, the
teacher knows you want to say something or ask questions. You shake your head, and people knows you are
saying "No". You NOD and people know you are saying "Yes". Other things can also carry messages. For
example, a sign at the bus stop helps you to know which bus to take. Signs on doors tell you where to go in or
out. Have you ever noticed that a lot of signs around you and that you receive messages from them all the time?
People can communicate in many other ways. An artist can use his drawings to tell about beautiful mountains,
about the blue sea and many other things. Books are written to tell you about all the wonderful things in the
world and also about people and their ideas. Books, magazines, TV and radios and films all help us to
communicate with each other. They all help us to know what is going on in the word and what other people are
thinking about.
