Giving someone good news is easy, but what about bad news? Are there any good ways to give bad
news without making people too upset? The following steps might help:
Say something positive. Try to start or end the conversation with some good news, so that it"s not all bad.
For example, "You did very well in the interview, but unfortunately we"ve given the job to somebody else."
Prepare your listener for the news. Use phrases to introduce what you"re going to say, like "Unfortunately,....", "I"m really sorry, but..." or "I"m afraid I"ve got some bad news." This gives the listener time to prepare
for what you" re going to say.
Try to give a reason. People like to know why things go wrong. Try to explain the decision. If someone
doesn" t get the job, can you explain why? If you have to cancel an appointment, try to give a reason.
Use a soft tone of voice. If you"re giving someone bad news, try to use a soft, calm voice to make your
sound kind. Say things to show you understand, like "I"m really sorry." or "I know this must be disappointing."

14-year-old Jason Morgan talks about an exciting science project.
Last month I got the chance to take part in an underwater research project in an area of the Gulf of
Mexico called the Flower Gardens. A team of professional researchers" led by the scientist Dr Matt Phillips,
was trying to learn more about the fish and different creatures that live in this part of the sea. The Flower
Gardens are a long way from the shore (海岸) and we spent three days on a boat.
The team used a piece of underwater equipment called ROV to collect information. The ROV was great fun. It was controlled by a computer on the boat, and I was allowed to operate it a few times.
However, the thing I enjoyed most was diving (潜水) into the water. At first, I was quite scared---mainly
because I couldn" t see land in any direction. But as soon as I jumped into the water, I wasn"t afraid anymore.
It was amazing to see the colorful fish swimming around and I could see all the ways to the Flower Gardens,
which are almost 30 meters down. I will never forget the Flower Gardens. The trip was like a holiday but I also
learnt new things about science and research projects. It was a great opportunity and it has made me think
about my goals (目标) in life. The experience will help me work harder to become a scientist.

5. What might Jason write in his diary about the trip?
A. It was interesting to work with Dr Phillips and his team but I wish someone else had been on the trip.

I had the meanest mother in the whole world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have
porridge, eggs or toast. When others had Cokes and candy for lunch, I had to eat a sandwich. But at least
I wasn"t alone when I was sad. My sister and two brothers had the same mean (刻薄的) mother as I did.
My mother preferred to know where we were all the time. She had to know who our friends were and
where we were going. We had to clean clothes and take a bath every day. The other kids got to wear the
same clothes for days. We could not lie in bed "sick" in order to miss school.
The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by nine each night and get up at eight the next morning.
We couldn"t sleep till noon like our friends. So while they slept, my mother was brave to break the Child
Labour Law. She made us work. We had to wash dishes, make beds, and learn to cook and all sorts of
things at home. I believe she lay awake thinking up all things for us to do. 
My mother was a complete failure as a mother. Two of her children received higher education. None of
us have ever been arrested (taken away by the police) or divorced. She forced us to grow up into educated
and honest adults. I am trying to raise my three children this way. I am filled with pride when my children
call me "mean". Why? Because now I thank God every day for giving me the meanest mother in the world.

The building is shaking. A woman with a baby in her arms is trying to open the door, but fails. Finding
no way, she rushes into her bedroom and there they survive the earthquake. 
In a factory building, as the workshop floor swings under the terrible shaking, workers run for safety.
Some hide (隐藏) under the machines and survive, but others who try to run outside are killed by the falling
ceilings.
These scenes, played by actors and actresses, are from a film of science education 《Making a
Split Second Decision》 shown in 1998 on China Central TV in memory of Tangshan Earthquake. By
studying actual cases in the earthquake areas and scientific experiments, experts (专家) find that buildings
remain untouched for the first 12 seconds of an earthquake.
In this short time, one has the best chance of surviving an earthquake by staying near the inside walls, in
bedrooms and under beds, experts concluded in the film. "Earthquakes seem to catch the lives of those who
run," said many survivors in the earthquake areas, describing how their friends were killed on the doorways
or along the stair steps as they tried to get out of the building.
Their advice was proved in the film, "Take a hiding-place where you are rather than run, unless you are
sure you can reach a safe open place in ten seconds."
