Jeanne Calment, a French woman, held the record for living the longest in the world. She died in 1995
at the age of 120 years and 238 days. A Japanese man died in 1986 at the age of 120 years and 237
days.
Jeanne Calment lived in a small old people"s home in the south of France; her husband, her only child
and her grandson all died . She was nearly blind (瞎的) and deaf (聋的) and was always in a wheelchair,
but her doctor described her as being more like a 90-year-old in good health than someone of 120. She
still had a lively sense of humor (幽默感). She said that God forgot all about her.
So what is the key to a long life? Some doctors say that diet, exercise and no smoking are the three
important things. Jeanne Calment followed two of the tips (窍门). She always ate a healthy diet, and she
did exercise every day until she broke her leg at the age of 115. However, until recently she drank two
glasses of strong red wine a day, and she smoked (now only a little). And Jeanne Calment might have got
very good genes (基因) from her parents. Her father lived to the age of 94 and her mother to 86.
A man bought her house when she was 80 . He said he would pay her some money every year until she
died. It seemed (似乎)a good deal at the time, but the man paid her at least three times (倍)the value (价
值) of the house. Every year on her birthday Jeanne Calment sent him a card saying:
Sorry, I"m still alive!

B. Because she asked the man to pay her more than they first agreed.
C. Because the man paid her much more money than the value of the house.
D. Because the house was too expensive.
Safety Activities for Middle School Kids
School is not the safe place as it used to be. How do we keep school safer? How do we help students
stay away from danger? There are many activities that teachers can do to teach safety in an easy way.
Here are some stories from the students who have had the safety class in No. 1 Middle School.
Mike Smith: About Sports Safety
Once, our head teacher made up a story about sports safety. All we needed to do was to point out safe
and unsafe sports behaviors in the story. From this lesson, we knew we should always do warm-up
activities before playing sports and drink some water after that.
Amy Young: About Classroom Safety
Yes, making up stories is a good way to learn and enjoy ourselves. We were once asked to make up a
story about a boy called Little Naughty (调皮的). He always did something naughty in the classroom and
got himself into trouble. In this way, we learned to behave (为人处世) well and get on well with each
other.
Frank Green: About Fire Safety
In our school, we have a fire emergency response practice (火警应急演习) in September every year.
So we know where to go if there is a fire in a school. We learn to use the fire extinguisher (灭火器), too.
But I don"t think we should be allowed to put out the fire by ourselves, it"s too dangerous for young
students like us.
