You probably know you should say “please” and “thank you” at restaurants. You probably know the rules of a library. You know you should respect(尊重) and be nice to your classmates. But do you have music manners?
Keep It Down! You have to notice the volume of your music. You should not play your music so loud that everyone around you can hear it. Some people might even get angry. Usually, when you play the music loud on an MP3 player, other people can"t hear the words of the song. They just hear a loud sound. No one wants to listen to this. Very loud music can also be bad for your ears, so even if you are alone when listening to your MP3 player, you shouldn’t have it turned up too high.
Take Them off! You need to know when to turn your MP3 player off and put it away. Libraries and schools don"t allow MP3 players. There are other places, like museums, that don’t have rules, but it would be rude to have your MP3 player on. Why would you listen to music at a play, a movie or a sporting event? You would miss what is going on and others would wonder why you even came.
Take One Out! Once in a while it"s OK just to take out one earphone and not the other. Imagine you are listening on your MP3 player when someone asks you the way. It would not be rude to take out one earphone, tell him the way, and put back the earphone and continue listening. You can also do this when you order food at a fast-food restaurant or when you answer the telephone and it"s not for you.
It’s Your Choice! There are times when you need to decide what is best. For example, some people can listen to music on their MP3 players when reading books, while others think it is disturbing. In cases like this, you need to do what seems right for you.

举一反三
Dear Linda,
I have been in England three months now, and it’s my first time to be here. I hope you don"t think I"ve forgotten you. There have been so many places to see and so many things to do that I"ve not had much time for writing letters.
I shall soon be starting my studies at King"s College. So far I"ve been learning about England and British ways of living. I won"t tell you about London. There are plenty of books you can read and plenty of pictures you can look at. I"m sure you"ll be more interested to know what I think about the life here.
I find some of the customs (风俗) new and interesting. People here do not shake hands as much as we do in Europe. During the first few weeks I was often surprised because people did not put out their hands when I met them. Men raise their hats to women but not to each other.
Yours
Alice

Feeling left out?
A reader wrote in to say that she was feeling lonely at break because her best friend wasn’t around. Here’s our advice to her—and to all kids who feel lonely sometimes.
It’s hard when a best friend isn’t around—maybe because she moved to a different school or a different class. You may feel lonely at break or lunchtime. You want to have new friends.but how do you make them? Maybe it seems like everybody else already has their friends. But remember, there’s always room for more friends.
Start by looking around your classroom—think about which kids you’d like to play with at break.Look for chances to say hi to them, smile, and be friendly.Offer to share something or express your appreciation(欣赏)to them.Invite someone to play with you or say “Do you want to sit here?” in the lunchroom. When you’re at break, walk over to kids you want to play with.act friendly, and say “Hi,can l play, too?” or just join in.If you have trouble doing this or if you’re feeling shy, ask your teacher to help you make new friends.Teachers are usually pretty good at matching up friends. The best way to make friends is to be a friend.Be kind,be friendly, share, say nice things, offer to help—and pretty soon, you’ll have one,or two,or even more new friends.
You might still miss that special best friend. But when you see each other, you can share something you didn’t have before she left:You can introduce her to your new friends!

Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people 4 to give money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man came to see 5 things were. The boy recognized his footsteps (认出他的脚步声)and asked, “Were you the one who 6 my sign this morning? What did you write?”

There are at least two lessons we can learn 14 this story. First, be thankful for what you have. Someone else has less. Help them if you can. 15 , be creative. Think differently. There is always a better way!
I am a person who can get angry easily. But since I read an article 1 by my English teacher, things have changed a lot. I’m 2 at a boarding (寄宿的) school. So how can we be tolerant(宽容的,容忍的)? Smiling 7 others is the easiest way. Another way is 8 if your ideas are reasonable (有道理的) and right 9 having an argument. If others’ ideas are really not good, keep an open mind. Try 10 them. 11 a friend is much better than having an enemy after all. Also 12 point out other’s mistakes in public. This will make people lose 13 and get angry. If you really want to help, send a letter instead. On the other hand, if 14 points out your disadvantages, don’t be angry. Just think this is a person who really __15___to help you and become friends. Remember: Tolerance makes life easier.
