The first time I saw him, I was too shy to speak to him. “My English is too poor!” I thought. My grandmother told me that he had just moved into our yard. “I don’t like it!” she said. “Foreigners aren’t like us. Maybe he’ll play loud music and parties every night! I’m sure he’s going to cause trouble.”
Several days later, I met the foreigner as I was walking home after work. “Hello!” he said (in Chinese!). “My name’s Tony. I’ve just moved into the house next door to yours.” While I was wondering what to say, he continued, “There’s a nice bar down the road. Why don’t you and your family come and have dinner with me?” “Bars are bad places,” said my grandmother when I told her, but we decided to go.
The bar was not at all what I had expected. It was in a beautiful little yard house, with several large bookshelves and pictures of Tibet on the walls. Several Chinese people and foreigners were sitting drinking or reading books. I noticed that some of the foreigners were speaking Chinese in a low voice to each other! “Oh, what a civilized place!” my grandmother exclaimed.
The bar served special “hutong pizzas”. As we ate, Tony told us about himself-he is an English expert in environment. He always likes to be quiet. My grandmother said to me, “He really seems like a very nice young man.”

Salsa (萨尔萨舞)
I try to maintain my weight through dancing. Dancing improves my coordination and sense of rhythm in addition to burning calories. I"m personally interested in salsa, which I find sexy and expressive(有表现力的). But I have not yet to start classes, because classes are very expensive, and I cannot find a dance partner.
Ping-Pong
Ping-pong is the national sport of China, so how could I know nothing about it?
My father is a ping-pong fan, and a really good player. He"s won several informal (非正式的) matches. My relationship with ping-pong has always been on-and-off. I"ll get into it for a while, and then lose interest. The reason is because I can’t find a good partner. Some stronger can depress you, while someone weaker (or just as weak) can make the game boring.
Tae Kwon Do (跆拳道)
I"ve recently decided to try tae kwon do as my regular exercise activity. There’s a story behind this choice: A few weeks ago, I was sitting on a bus, concentrating on a book. Suddenly, the bus became very quiet except for the sound of a woman’s crying. I looked up to see what had happened and overheard whispers that she had just quarreled with a man, and the man slapped(拍打) her face. No one on the bus dared say anything because the man looked really strong. Even now I feel ashamed I was among the silent.
That’s why I"ve made up my mind to learn something that will help me protect others and myself.

Later, the woman spreading the rumor(谣言) learned that it was completely untrue. She was very sorry and went to a wise man to find out what she could do to repair the harm.
"Go to the marketplace," he said, "buy a chicken, and have it killed. Then on your way home, pick its feathers and drop them one by one along the road." Although surprised by this advice, the woman did what she was told.
The next day the wise man said, "Now, go and collect all those feathers you dropped yesterday and bring them back to me."
The woman followed the same road, but she was so discouraged when she found the wind had blown the feathers all away. After searching for hours, she returned with only three in her hand.
"You see," said the wise man, "it"s easy to drop them, but it is impossible to get them all back. So it is the same with gossip. It doesn"t take much to spread a rumor, but once you do, you can never completely undo( 弥补) the wrong."

A week before her mother’s birthday, she went shopping after a quick and simple lunch. When she had been looking for half an hour, she found a shop that was selling cheep umbrellas(伞), and decided to take a black one, since her mother had lost hers the month before.
She thought, “You could carry that when you are wearing clothes of any color.” So she decided to buy a lovely black umbrella and took it back to school with her until her classes had finished.
On her way back home in the train that evening, she felt hungry because she had such a small lunch that she went along to the buffet car(餐车) for another sandwich and cup of coffee. She had left the black umbrella above her seat in the compartment(车厢), but when she got back, it had gone! When she had left the compartment, there had been no other passengers(乘客) in it, but now there were three.
Sally began to cry when she saw that the umbrella was no longer there. The other passengers felt very sorry for her and asked what the matter was. After the three other passengers heard it, they asked her for her mother’s address so that they could sent the umbrella to her if someone had taken it by mistake and brought it back after Sally had got out of the train.
