I will never forget one day in my first year in high school. I was sitting on the stairs, putting my head in my hands and crying out to my parents because I would never be able to save enough money for college. My parents tried to comfort me, but it seemed impossible to save$64,268, the cost for the private college that I wanted to enter. Now let me tell you the amazing story of how I saved this sum of money. It all began with a newspaper route in Ankeny, IA. I hated delivering newspapers that route, but decided to continue for six months until my family moved to Wausau. With a few dollars from my newspaper route, a small nest egg began to develop. My next job was working in an athletic company. The money continued to grow very slowly. Half a year later, I worked for a fruit store. Then, when I was in junior high school, I began to be a waitress at Denny’s restaurant. It was hard work, but the money began to roll. By the time my senior year arrived, I had saved a large sum of money. This was encouraging, but I knew that I would also need some help, so I began to apply for scholarships. Sometimes I got upset because I was rejected again and again. Then, my first scholarship offer came in,$2,000 a year to play tennis. This is only a small sum of money at a school that costs about$14,000 a year, but it was a start. Several other scholarships also came and soon I was up to have$9,050 in scholarships. With scholarships and savings, I saved enough money for my first year. Several years later, I was off to college. Because of careful saving, I did not have to work during the school year.

We go to school every day to become a better person. So how can we become powerful and start changes in our own life? Perhaps we can get tips from the US First Lady Michelle Obama. During her visit to China, from March 20–26, Mrs Obama shared her views on education with students. The first lady encouraged Chinese students to aim high and get a good education. In Chengdu No 7 High School, she told students that having poor roots doesn’t matter as long as you have perseverance (毅力). Mrs Obama said her family was not rich. Like many Chinese students, her parents had big dreams for her. She felt the weight of her parents’ sacrifices (牺牲) on her shoulders and worked hard to make them proud. Persevering was not easy, though. Sometimes she had to wake up at 4:30 a.m. and study late into the night. “But whenever I got tired or discouraged… I would remember something my mother always told me. She said: ‘A good education is something that no one can take away from you.’” Mrs Obama also encourages Chinese students to study abroad. “As the Chinese saying goes: It is better to travel 10,000 miles than to read 10,000 books,” she said. It’s not enough to get good grades in school. It’s also important to have real experience with languages, cultures and societies different from your own, she noted. Studying abroad could also gain future international relations. It could help young people from different countries work together to deal with problems such as climate change, Mrs Obama said.

No one can change the weather. Nobody can control the weather. But if we read correctly the signs around us, we can tell what the more important changes in the weather will be. This way of telling what the weather will be like on the following day or two is called weather forecasting. For many centuries and in all countries, people have studied the weather and tried to make weather forecasting. Rings around the sun are a sign of coming rain. That many people feel their joints(关节) hurt is a sign of wet weather. Some birds fly high if fine weather is coming, but they fly near the ground if rainy or stormy weather is on the way. If you see a rainbow during rainy weather, this is a sign that the weather will become clear and fine. Such rainbows come in the evening. If the stars twinkle clearly at night, then fine weather will continue. If a fog appears in the morning just above a river, then the day will be warm. If the sunset is mostly red in colour, then the following day will be fine. If a rainbow appears in the morning, rainy weather will probably come. Most of the above sayings have been made by the people who have used their eyes and brains to make weather forecasting. 小题1:Which of the following can be used here to replace(取代) the underlined phrase “on the way”?A.away | B.gone | C.disappearing | D.coming | 小题2:When you see the stars twinkle clearly at night, the weather will be_________.A.warm | B.rainy | C.clear and fine | D.cold | 小题3:Which of the following signs can tell the weather will probably be rainy?A.A rainbow appears in the morning. | B.Some birds fly high. | C.The stars twinkle clearly at night. | D.Fogs appear in the morning just above a river. | 小题4:Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?A.Nobody can control the weather. | B.If the sunset is red in colour, then the next day will be fine. | C.If many people feel their joints hurt, it may be a sign of wet weather. | D.People only use their eyes and brains to make weather forecasting. | 小题5:Which of the following sentences can suitable according to the passage?A.活到老,学到老。 | B.朝霞不出门,晚霞行千里。 | C.早起的鸟儿捉虫多. | D.一日之计在于晨。 |
